MISSION

Seeking to engage all Penn alumni in a mutually beneficial, lifelong connection to each other, their school, and the University, and encourage alumni support and guidance to advance Penn's eminence for future generations.

DEFINITION of ALUMNI

As indicated in the American Heritage Dictionary, an alumnus or alumna is either someone who has attended the school (or a "former student of a school") or someone who has graduated from the school.[1][2] Furthermore, according to dictionaryreference.com and the United States Department of Education, the term alumnae is used in conjunction with either women's colleges[5] or a female group of students. The term alumni is used in conjunction with either men's colleges, a male group of students, or a mixed group of students. Penn's Alumni Community = degreed and non-degreed alumni.

PENN ALUMNI: Demographics, History, Purpose, and Structure

Penn Alumni is the formal name for our family of over 290,000 living Penn graduates.

The object and purposes of Penn Alumni is to promote the interest and welfare of the University of Pennsylvania and its alumni; to inspire, develop and maintain the interest of the alumni in the University; to help alumni keep alive the friendships, associations and interests they formed as students at Pennsylvania; to foster giving to the University; to maintain close cooperation among alumni, officers and Trustees of the University and to establish a medium through which the alumni may support and advance the cause of higher education by the University; all of the foregoing to be consistent with the policies established by the Trustees of the University.

PENN TRADITIONS: BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY

The Penn Traditions program is a comprehensive approach to student development/alumni relations programming, with the objective of creating student understanding and awareness of Penn's institutional mission, history and diverse traditions, the partnership financing higher education, University goals, and the role of alumni and students within the greater Penn community. The program's inaugural event, “Highball to Hey Day: The Penn Experience” was held in February 2004 and programming for all four undergraduate classes has been ongoing. The program is designed to foster tradition and pride, promote and inspire class unity, offer opportunities for students and alumni to communicate directly, educate students and prepare them for their lifelong role as alumni, and keep young alumni connected to Penn after graduation.

PENN ALUMNI ADMISSIONS RESOURCE CENTER (PAARC)

The mission of the Penn Alumni Admissions Resource Center (PAARC) is to provide guidance and professional insight to alumni families with children or grandchildren as early as 7th grade, focusing on what it takes to become competitive in the Penn applicant pool.

Alumni families are invited to attend a Legacy Advising Session at the Sweeten Alumni House on campus, where they will receive specific advice about applying to Penn. At the end of that session, 11th grade legacy students also have an opportunity for one-on-one time with a staff member. PAARC staff are accessible by phone and email, and they also conduct events in conjunction with regional alumni clubs. For more information, visit the PAARC website and sign up to receive their electronic newsletter.

ALUMNI EDUCATION

Consistent with the idea of a continuum of education, the Director for Alumni Education works across all teams within Alumni Relations to create formal procedures for integrating Penn faculty into alumni activities and to create substantive and innovate programming for realizing Penn's potential as the intellectual home of its alumni. The Penn Alumni Travel program complements Alumni Education activities, offering educational travel programs to explore the world with fellow Penn alumni.

CLASSES & REUNIONS

The Classes & Reunions team works with a network of alumni volunteers who are involved with organizing class-focused initiatives and activities. Creates and manages programs and events involving and engaging alumni classes with particular emphasis on quinquennial reunions. Alumni are generally divided into three categories: Old Guard (classes 50 years and out), Core Alumni (20 to 50 years out), and Young Alumni (current students to 20 years out). The Classes and Reunions team also coordinates the two largest alumni events: Homecoming and Alumni Weekend.

GLOBAL ALUMNI NETWORK (GAN)

From Philadelphia to Hong Kong, the Global Alumni Network team coordinates a world-wide network of alumni volunteers providing year-round intellectual, cultural, social, and networking events. The GAN team serves as a resource to the alumni volunteer club leadership around the nation and abroad to communicate between the University and local alumni, and among the alumni themselves. At the end of 2006, the Global Alumni Network included 62 domestic clubs and 45 international clubs.

ALUMNI GROUPS

· Association of Alumnae - Founded in 1912, the Association of Alumnae is committed to strengthening the relationship between the University of Pennsylvania and its alumnae and to promote the interests and welfare of the University in areas of concern to women. All Penn women graduates are members of the Association of Alumnae and are welcome to join its Board.

· Diversity Alliance - The Diversity Alliance team actively encourages participation in alumni activities among its many diverse constituents. In particular, the Diversity Alliance team works with alumni volunteers to create programming of interest to diverse alumni groups; provide opportunities for outreach, networking, and mentoring between diverse alumni and students; and identify diverse alumni for volunteer leadership roles across the University. The current Diversity Alliance Groups include the James Brister Society (JBS), the Black Alumni Society (BAS), the Association of Latino Alumni (ALA), the University of Pennsylvania Asian Alumni Network (UPAAN), PennGALA, and Association of Native Alumni (ANA).

· Trustees' Council of Penn Women (TCPW) - Founded in 1987, TCPW is a national network of Penn alumnae who support, foster and promote the advancement of women's issues with the University. Membership in the Trustees' Council of Penn Women is through a nomination process and is limited to 170 Penn alumnae.

THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE

The primary communication vehicle for Penn Alumni is The Pennsylvania Gazette, the official alumni magazine of the University of Pennsylvania. Published six times per year, it has the widest circulation of any regularly produced campus publication (~153,000). The magazine carries features; letters to the editor; and news about the University, the faculty, the students, and alumni.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

Coordinates the production and distribution of Penn Alumni and Alumni Relations communication vehicles such as web sites, guides, newsletters, podcasts, invitations, and other print and electronic materials, e.g., Proudly Penn (annual alumni resource guide), Red & Blue Online (bi-monthly electronic newsletter), and the “Homecoming Guide” and “Alumni Weekend Guide.” Also manages the marketing and affinity programs such as the Penn Alumni Insurance Program.
