Describing people Recording 2

  1. Clare? Carol’s sister? She’s really lovely. She’s seventeen. Long straight red hair, all down her back, a really interesting sort of face, and she ‘s got a fresh complexion – surprisingly she doesn’t have freckles. She’s got green eyes, lovely green eyes. Oh yes, and she’s got dimples in her cheeks.

  1. Yes, officer, my husband’s a middle-aged man. He looks about fifty-five, well, he is fifty-five. He’s got a sort of round face and he’s bald – in fact his head looks a bit like a billiard ball…, yes – and he’s got a sallow complexion, he doesn’t get outdoors very much, you know. He eats too much, and he never takes any exercise. Brown eyes, he’s got brown eyes, and he’s got a moustache. I hope you find him.

  1. … she’s got a square sort of face, and she’s a bit pale, well, she doesn’t go out much so it shows in her skin… and she’s got really beautiful hair, you know, white and wavy. But it’s her eyes you notice first, really blue eyes. She wears glasses, but you notice those blue eyes.

  1. I simply must tell you about my new boyfriend, David. He’s marvelous. He’s got one of those oval faces, dark curly hair and… and he’s got light grey eyes, and a tanned skin, a real open-air sun-tan, and oh yes, he’s got a lovely smile. He’s really dishy. He’s about twenty-five, you know…

Man Where are you going for your holidays this year? Have you decided?

Woman Yes, we’re going to Corsica.

Man Oh. I know Corsica well. I spent a year there.

Woman Really? What’s it like?

Man It’s very beautiful. It’s got everything. Mountains, beaches, and good weather.

Woman And what are the people like?

Man They’re quite independent, but when you get to know them, they’re very friendly. You’ll have a really good time.

3

Paul Anna, what was your first boyfriend like?

Anna Goodness! Why do you want to know that?

Paul I’m just interested.

Anna Well, he was good-looking, with dark hair and big, brown eyes. He was very romantic. He was always buying me flowers and presents. Of course, he wasn’t as nice as you.

THE SCAR

(by L’ih Yuh Kuo)

Recording 4

A little boy invited his mother to attend his elementary school’s first teacher-parent conference. To the little boy’s dismay, she said she would go. This would be the first time that his classmates and teacher met his mother and he was embarrassed by her appearance. Although she was a beautiful woman, there was a severe scar that covered nearly the entire right side of her face. The boy never wanted to talk about why or how she got the scar.

At the conference, the people were impressed by the kindness and natural beauty of his mother despite the scar, but the little boy was still embarrassed and hid himself from everyone. He did, however, get within earshot of a conversation between his mother and his teacher, and heard them speaking.

“How did you get the scar on your face?” the teacher asked.

The mother replied, “When my son was a baby, he was in a room that caught fire. Everyone was too afraid to go in because the fire was out of control, so I went in. As I was running towards his crib, I saw a beam coming down and I placed myself over him trying to shield him. I was knocked unconscious but fortunately, a fireman came in and saved both of us. She touched the burned side of her face. “The scar will be permanent, but to this day, I have never regretted doing what I did”.

At this point, the little boy came out running to his mother with tears in his eyes. He hugged her and felt an overwhelming sense of her sacrifice that his mother had made for him. He held her hand tightly for the rest of the day.
