Inviting people to a party Recording 3 Dialogue 1

Alan Hello, Alan Cranmer speaking.

Anne Alan, hello. This is Anne Ridley here.

Alan Hello, Anne. How are things?

Anne Fine, thanks. Hey, are you and Meg doing anything this Saturday evening?

Alan This Saturday? No, we’re not.

Anne Well, Jim and I are organising a group to go out and have some supper together and then go on to disco.

Alan Sounds great! What time are you planning to meet?

Anne About nine, in the Chinese restaurant in the Market Square. Does that suit you?

Alan Great, lovely. Hey, shall I bring a car? I mean, can I give anyone a lift?

Anne Oh thanks, but I don’t think anyone needs a lift at the moment.

Alan Well, phone me if you need me, OK?

Anne Sure. Thanks. Look forward to seeing you, then.

Alan Me too. See you there, then. Bye.

Anne Bye.

Dialogue 2 Mary Hello, Mary Latimer here.

Anne Hello, Mary. It’s Anne Ridley here from Langham.

Mary Oh hello, Anne. How’s life?

Anne Oh, I can’t complain. How about you?

Mary Not bad, thanks.

Anne I’m calling to ask you… Are you and Jenny going anywhere this Saturday evening?

Mary No. Why? Is this going to be another of your parties?

Anne More or less. We are getting a group together to go out for a meal first and then go on to a disco.

Mary Sounds fine to me. Who’s going? The usual crowd?

Anne Yes, well, by the way, Neville’s coming.

Mary Neville? Not the tall, fair-haired man who looks like Robert Redford? You can count me in then…Oh, just one thing, I’m not sure about Jenny. She may be working on Saturday evening.

Anne Well, could you phone me when you know, please? We need to know the numbers so we can book the table in the restaurant.

Mary Right, I’ll phone you tonight about that. Hey, where are we meeting and when?

Anne You don’t know Langham very well, do you?

Mary Not very well, no. I know where your house is, at least.

Anne Yes…Let’s meet here then, at about nine. Is that OK?

Mary Fine, yes. I’ll phone you about Jenny tonight, then. Bye.

Anne Bye.

Dialogue 3

Trish Hello. Trish Rogers here.

Anne Trish, hello. This is Anne Ridley. How are you, then?

Trish Working like a slave, as usual. How about you?

Anne Oh, OK. Here, Trish, are you doing anything on Saturday evening? We’re going to a restaurant, then on to a disco.

Trish On Saturday evening? Oh… I’m afraid I might be, because I have to work all day on Saturday. The trouble is there are only two of us here in the garage, and the other one’s off with flu at the moment. I’d like to come, of course… Shall I phone you tomorrow?

Anne I hope you can come, anyway. Hey, and if you do, are you going to bring… oh, what’s his name?…

Trish Dougie?

Anne That’s right, Dougie. I knew it began with a D.

Trish The trouble is that I’m not speaking to Dougie at the moment. We had a fight last week, you see…

Anne Well, if you make your peace with him and if you want to bring him, could you call me so I know how many places we’ll need in the restaurant?

Trish Sure. I’ll phone you tomorrow, then.

Anne Bye for now, then.

Trish Bye, and thanks for thinking of us.
