5. Space and Time Factors

A fifth variable, space and time factors, can contribute to stress when an individual crosses a cultural boundary for a long time. A one-week visit to Rome would not be as stressful as a long trip in Italy. The nine-month winter in northern Canada would cause greater stress than a week-long visit at Christmas. A nine-month stay as a foreign student at Moscow State University can create difficulties in adapting to the foreign environment.

6. Geopolitical Factors

Finally, geopolitical factors play a part in developing stress from a cross-cultural experience. To visit a region in political strife - parts of Latin America, for example, or parts of the Middle East - creates levels of anxiety because of the unpredictability.

These six factors can serve as predictors of cultural stress. You can use them to estimate the likelihood of having difficulty with cross-cultural encounters. [6, pp.420-423]

VII. For fun

Here is a cross-cultural and nonverbal riddle. Can you figure out the answer?

In Japan, a young man and a woman meet and fall in love. They decide they would like to marry. The young man goes to his mother and describes the situation. "I will visit the girl's family," says the mother. "I will seek their approval." After some time, a meeting between mothers is arranged. The boy's mother goes to the girl's ancestral house. The girl's mother has prepared tea. The women talk about the fine spring weather: will this be a good year for cherry blossoms? The girl's mother serves a plate of fruit. Bananas are sliced and displayed in an exquisite design. Marriage never is mentioned. After the tea, the boy's mother goes home. "I am so sorry," she tells her son. "The other family has declined the match."

How did the boy’s mother know the marriage was unacceptable?

Answer: To a Japanese, the answer is obvious. Bananas do not go well with tea.
