The Passive with by and with

by + agent

In the Passive we use by + agent to say who or what did the action.

  • Most children are strongly influenced by their parents.

(Parents do the action.)

We put the agent (= a person who performs the action) into the Passive only if it adds information.

  • Iliad was written by Homer.

(The agent is not omitted; it adds

information; emphasis on the agent.)

When the agent is unknown, unimportant or obvious from the context, it is omitted.

  • The church was built in 1815. (unimportant agent)

  • He has been arrested.

(obviously by the police)

Agents such as: someone, people, I, you, etc. are omitted.

  • Somebody helped him.

He was helped (by somebody).

  • Somebody took my pen.

My pen was taken (by somebody).

(unknown agent, it is omitted.)

In Passive questions with who, whom, which we do not omit by.

  • Who gave you this book?

Who were you given this book by?

  • Who signed the letter?

Who was the letter signed by?
