Summary
This volume includes several case studies devoted to the problems of
the emergence and formation of personalistic concepts and the similar
approach in Russian thought, primarily theological. The collection begins
with a small cycle of studies, united mainly by the theological area of
research as well as the sources. The second part is devoted mainly to the
philosophical sources of Russian personalism.
Despite the noticeable disunity of the papers, we would like to point out the
general goal of the collection as a whole, that is, problematizing the contemporary
state of aff airs in the theological personalism and an invitation to discuss it.
Personalism in this case is understood as a multi-level phenomenon.
First, due to the chosen theological perspective, we will regard
personalism as the basic ideas and views in the theological movement
in Orthodoxy, presenting itself as «personalistic» or, to dissociate itself
from the same philosophical currents of the same name as «based on a
personal terminological system». To date, it is represented by a number
of well-known theologians and scholars of theology in Russia, such as
S. Chursanov, A. Mahler, father George Zavershinsky and many others,
as well as abroad (Metropolitan John (Zizioulas), Christos Yannaras,
bishop Kallistos Ware etc.). Usually, Vladimir Lossky is seen as one of
the founders of this approach. This movement is characterized primarily
by what it says about God and man, using the concept of «personality»
and arguing that it «is central to the Orthodox theological terminological
system». This approach is positioned as «rooted in dogmatic teaching». All
the traditional aspects of theology are understood by the means of putting
this concept at the core of theology, all traditional themes are interpreted
from the perspective of the personality of God and man. This also aff ects
the content of this theology, as well as its form and style.
Secondly, personalism should be considered as a patrological paradigm,
or a paradigm in a history of theology, which, on the one hand, is an attempt
of personalism to understand its place in the Tradition, having built its origin
383

РОЖДЕНИЕ ПЕРСОНАЛИЗМА ИЗ ДУХА НОВОГО ВРЕМЕНИ
from the Fathers of former times, primarily representatives of the «golden
age of patristics», and on the other, is a frame of reference, a «common
place», some self-evidence for a wider range of researchers. Thus, an
attempt to see the concept of «personality» in the Fathers' theology can be
found in the well-known patrologists and Church historians’ studies in the
history of theology as well as among personalistic theologians mentioned
above. On the other hand, for a number of researchers, who cannot be
classifi ed as «professional» personalists (both in Russia and abroad), the
idea that the Fathers wrote about the personality is often self-evident.
Third, personalism can also be understood as a broader way as a selfunderstanding of the modern person, and not only a Christian. It is transfered
through a much wider range of sources. These are, fi r st of all, the texts of ascetic
writers, famous preachers and publicists, who simply speak of God and faith
in modern language (Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, Archimandrite
Sophronius Sakharov, Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos, etc.). This is the
circle of artistic, psychological and philosophical literature that forms the
modern reader’s language of self-understanding, before conversion as well.
It often makes the personalistic theology «surprisingly accurate» and relevant
for those who have an appeal to faith, modern and understandable. The very
language of our time is «personalistic» in the broadest sense, it sets the forms
and results of self-refl ection, and in this sense «personalism» is not only a
theological, but also a general humanitarian, cultural paradigm. Moreover,
it seems that this general cultural linguistic and conceptual fi eld turns out to
be the soil for the theological paradigm, including when it comes to polemics
about theological refi nements of the concept of «personality» (in which the
content of the concept is compared to the usage established, for example, in
psychology, not in favor, of course, for the latter).
From the theological personalism perspective, «the problem of
the correspondence of theological constructions based on the patristic
terminological system expressed by other terminological means» cannot be
solved rationally, since «its solution ultimately rests on the basic impossibility
for creating formal criteria for such substantial conformity». Taking into
account this kind of challenge, in this collection we will nevertheless try to
problematize the declared identity.
When did this paradigm originate or when did it penetrate Russian
theology? What contributed to its emergence or reception? What is the
semantic excess comparing to the previous concepts, which topics have to be
deduced from the «personality» and are introduced into theology through
it? Modern Western scholars suggest that personalistic philosophy must be
384

SUMMARY
viewed as a worldview built into the philosophical and theological diversity
of the late 18th till early 20th centuries. This means that a personalistic way
of speaking may not be a special topic, but nevertheless it will be built into
the author's «frame of reference»: self-understanding, understanding the
world or theology. Accordingly, the entry of this paradigm could not at fi rst
have a terminological unambiguity (which is often taken for granted by the
modern person).
Due to this seeming lack of scope of the problems that need to be
studied and the impossibility to propose any fi nal solutions, the collections
authors suggest to begin discussing these problems from the perspective of
«methodological pluralism». Each paper, devoted in one way or another to
the forming of the now established «terms,» without which, as it may seem
to many, «it is now impossible to imagine Orthodox theology», reveals,
thus, forgotten or unknowingly used semantic layers, the problematic
nature of these concepts, and often their fundamental disagreement with
the traditional speech about God. Even at the beginning of the twentieth
century, the ideas and concepts, fundamental for today's theological systems,
were not so smoothly harmonized and fi t into the system. Studies show that
these problems are not yet solved, while many are forgotten or lost.
However, in the proposed collection, particular cases from the history
of Russian thought illustrate all these questions. With the integrity at the
level of the regarded problem and goals the individuality of the cases in
question, and the diff erence between authors’ approaches cause some lack
of continuity.
Each of the micro-studies represent not only a line in the personalism
discussion, but also a contribution to the special fi eld of research to which
it refers.
Thus, the main part of the fi rst section «Modern Anthropology Reception
in Russian Thought: Theological Plots» includes a number of writings
by Prot. Pavel Khondzinsky exploring the relations between Fenelon's
mysticism and Kant's philosophy, that is of interest for the history both of
theology and philosophy. The unpublished and unexplored manuscripts
of st. Innocent of Kherson are analyzed. In the same cycle, attention is
paid to the little studied psychology in ecclesiastical academies — with its
numerous attempts to correlate anthropology and theology, that leads to the
emergence of personalistic approaches. The cycle ends with an appendix,
which examines, on the one hand, the belonging of the saint to his epoch,
and, on the other, overcoming a number of its mindset. In addition, this
section includes a paper by V. Boldareva who attempts to understand the
385

РОЖДЕНИЕ ПЕРСОНАЛИЗМА ИЗ ДУХА НОВОГО ВРЕМЕНИ
famous dispute of St. Ignatius and St. Feofan about the corporeality of the
soul from the standpoint of the conceptual paradigms behind it.
The same applies to the articles of the philosophical section «The
formation of a personalistic approach in Russian thought: philosophical
plots», each presenting a valuable aacent for the historiography of the
personalities examined. In the K. Antonov’s papers the problems of
mystical experience and the Chaadaev’s philosophy of consciousness
are examined; and the connection between G. Florovsky’s theological
thought and the philosophy of law of P. Novgorodtsev is established; the
dialectic of the idea of the individual in the philosophical and theological
thought of Fr. S. Bulgakov is analyzed, the question of the origins and
motivation of the concept of «Western captivity of Orthodox theology»,
fundamentally important for personalistic discourse, is raised. T. Rezvykh
addresses untranslated texts of Franz Baader, who is signifi cant for Russian
religious phlosophy, she also reveals the signifi cance of Kant's ideas not
only for Florensky’s development of the subject of apokatastasis, but also
for the solution of this theological problem proposed by him. V. Boldareva's
papers consider the sources of N. Berdyaev's view of the subject, and also
clarify the question of Berdyaev’s existentialism and personalism. Berdyaev
is one of the most important representatives of Russian philosophical
personalism, influencing both French personalism and the so-called
Orthodox «theological personalism». N. Koreneva's article reviews the
personalistic tendencies of a number of Russian thinkers in their connection
with the category of religious experience.
The section «Varia» includes two pap ers of a broader and more par ticular
nature. First, a well known paper by Yuri Shichalin «About the concept of
“personality” applied to the triune God and the God-man Jesus Christ in
Orthodox dogmatic theology», that was fi rst published in 2009 and opened
a discussion about the genealogy of personalism, is being re-published.
The authors of the collection express cordial gratitude and appreciation to
Yuri Anatolyevich. His article is of program signifi cance for this collection,
because it was the fi rst to pay attention to the problem. In addition, this
section also contains a discussion paper by M. Burmistrov, based on an
analysis of the Vladimir Lossky theological project, questioning of the very
possibility of modern theology. We see the problematic and debatable nature
of the questions posed in these two papers as the best way to contribute
to a productive discussion of the whole complex of topics related to the
theological personalism and its most signifi cant representatives’ writing.
