When Phelim, the blind piper, played on his pipes there was a
magic in his music. Lilting over the hills would sound the silver

clamour of his reeds, and all the birds of the air would know to
answer him. Throaty murmur of ring-dove and willow-warbler.
Tinkling note of meadow-lark and wren. The liquid, lovely melodies of blackbird and thrush.
He knew the voice of the tall trees and the whispering grasses,
the changing songs of wind and wave. To him would come fl owing
the shy perfume of the fl owers, the chime of the heather bells, the
busy droning of the bees. Laughter of children was in his music
and the stir of dancing feet. And sometimes it would be sad with
the sorrow of one lamenting in desolate places.
No door but opened at his touch, and there was always the
welcome of an inn or kindly shelter of some poor man’s dwelling.
Sitting by the hearth the small homely sounds of the houseplace
would come to him. Clatter of pails and plash of a churning. The
purring of a kettle from its swinging crook and slow dunt of the
cradle rockers on an earthen fl oor. And above the busy whirr of
the wheel a woman’s gentle voice to question.
«Is there sadness on you, blind man, that you sit silent and
still in the shadows?»
«No sadness, I thank you, woman of the house, saving a regret
that I may not see the kindness of your glance».
«Have you walked long in the darkness?»
«The whole of my life indeed, since the sight of my eyes was
lost to me at birth».
He must have been forty years of age, and him returning from
a wedding feast in the lowlands of Down, when the wonder of his
life came upon him. He had walked far and was tired, and so sat
down on a mossy boulder to rest a while. The full of the moon was
at hand and though he could not see the white radiance of the
night he sensed the clarity of the air and the stillness about him.
Suddenly there came stealing on his ear the sound of faint music
differing from his own imaginings. As he listened it came nearer
and it seemed that he sensed the rhythm of dancing feet – small,
fairy feet. Then a soft voice spoke close to his ear:
«Phelim the Piper, you that have the music of the reeds, will
you be after playing for our dancing?» And Phelim must have
granted a greater request for the charm of the pleading.
«Deed and I will so», he said and lifting his pipes made music
that was lightsome as a summer song. Soon he heard the patter
of dancing as the fairy folk surrounded him, the whoops of them
in a reel and the clapping of their hands as they fi nished a set. All
the old country airs he played to them: reel and jig, gavotte and
roundel. On and on he played until with the chill of the dawn the
spell of his music was broken, and he knew himself to be alone.

There fell on him then a great languor and he cast himself face
downward on the heather.
When he came to himself the sun was high in the heavens and
the warm odour of opening fl owers fragrant on the breeze. And
waking, he was conscious of a shimmering mist where always
there had been darkness and of dim shapes fl oating about him so
that he cried out in fear, not knowing the wonder of his dawning
power. Then his vision cleared and the miracle of his recovered
sight reached his understanding. And he shaded his eyes from
the glory of the sun.
Below him stretched the blue ribbon of the river and steep fall
of larch and pine woods mantling the slope of great hills; while
all around lay the fertile downlands patched with green fi elds of
barley and rye, with plains of pink clover and white bean blossom. The shadows of the clouds went drifting slowly and the gold
of the gorse was a leaping fl ame that burnt in the hollow places.
He watched the happy soaring of the birds and movement of life
about him; the creeping of jewelled insects, the delicate marvel
of a moth’s spread wing, wild bees hovering above the hanging
spray of briar and honeysuckle.
Long he stood at gaze savouring the sweetness of the gift restored to him before he raised his adoring face to the blue sky.
«Sure I never knew», said Phelim the Piper, «that the whole world
was a wonderland for those having eyes to see!»
