16. Beverages that have become popular

Pearl milk tea is said to have originated in Taiwan in 1983, by a Taiwanese teashop owner named Liu Han-Chieh , who experimented with cold milk tea by adding fruit, syrup, candied yams and, finally, tapioca balls. Although the drink was not so popular at first, publicity from a Japanese television show made businessmen take notice and it quickly became well known throughout Asia in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, bubble tea began to become popular in the United States and Canada.

Yerba Mate is made from the yerba mate plant which is a shrub or small tree growing up to 15 meters tall. The leaves are evergreen. The infusion called mate is prepared by steeping dry leaves and twigs of yerba mate in hot water, rather than in boiling water like black tea. Drinking mate with friends from a shared hollow gourd is a common social practice in Argentina among people of all ages, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, eastern Bolivia and southern and western Brazil and has been cultivated in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. The flavor of brewed yerba mate is strongly vegetal, herbal and grassy, similar to some varieties of green tea. Some consider the flavour to be very agreeable, but it is generally bitter if steeped in boiling water.

A roasted grain beverage is a hot beverage made from one or more cereal grains roasted and commercially processed into crystal or powder form to be reconstituted

later in hot water. The product is often marketed as a caffeine-free alternative to coffee and tea. Some common ingredients include toasted barley, malted barley, rye, chicory, molasses, and beet root.

Mulled wine or Glühwein, as it is called in Germany, variations of which are popular in Europe, is wine, usually red, combined with spices and typically served warm. It is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas and Halloween. It is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus and sugar.
