A day in my life
I get up at about six and plan my day. I leave the house at 7.00 a.m. and catch the 7.15 to London. I get to work at about 8.30 and spend an hour dealing with my mail. From 9.30 to 12.00, I telephone our suppliers. I usually have lunch in the canteen between 12.30 and 2.00. We have a general meeting from 2.00 to 3.00, and then, from 3.00 until about 5.00, I look at samples and discuss possible new suppliers. I leave at about 5.30 and get home at about 7.00. It’s a long day, but I love the job. Before I became a buyer, I was a fashion designer. I enjoyed designing, but I wanted a change. At home, I like to paint and listen to music. It helps me to relax. In the future, I would like to run my own clothes business. Or perhaps I can be a supplier for Marks & Spencer!

Ex. 11. Read the text and analyze the power of number “13”. Give some other examples.
Number power
Some people say it makes no sense, but numbers play an important part in many lives. That's why the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre has decided not to allow the number 666 on car numberplates because it is the mark of the devil.
Other numbers have great superstitious power – just ask triskaidekaphobics – people who fear the number 13 and Friday 13th in particular. Thanks to them, elevators all over the country Jimp from floor 12 to floor 14. On Concorde, you won't find Row 13, and many hotels have no floor 13.
At the Savoy Hotel, they are very careful. If there are 13 guests to dinner, the waiters bring an extra “guest” – a small black cat made of stone called Kaspar – to make the numbers up to 14. According to the story, a South African businessman, Wool Joel, went ahead with a dinner for 13 people in 1898 after the 14th guest cancelled. Joel was murdered soon afterwards.
People who study numbers say that each number relates to one of the planets and that your birthday has a special meaning. To find out what numbers are important to you, write down your birth date. The day describes your outer personality, the month is your inner self and the year is your future. Where there is more than one figure, add them together to get a single figure. For example, 1965 =1+9+6+5 which is 21. Then add 2+1 to get 3.
Ex. 12. Read the texts below and put questions to the numerals.

According to the Human Development Report 2007 the country was ranked 64th among 177 states. For the first time the country was named as having high index of potential human development, leading the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS), with Russia close behind (67th place). Kazakhstan occupies 73nd place and Ukraine 76th. The index was calculated on the basis of life expectancy, GDP per capita and adults’ educational level. Indirectly, these parameters encompass socio-economic development, health care, education, and welfare system. Belarus occupies 72nd place in terms of its GDP per capital and 33rd place in terms of adult educational level. Hopefully it is not a mere advancement in the table but a transition to an absolutely new category.
What makes Belarus special in respect to Sustainable Human Development (SHD) and what hinders the process is the ill-known problem of Chernobyl. The tragedy of 1986 has affected all spheres of human activity – from production and culture to science, trade and demographics. Over 1.300.000 people continue to live in the area which covers 20 percent of Belarus’ territory contaminated with radionuclides. Demographic situation leaves much to be desired.
The aftermaths of the Chernobyl tragedy are harmful, both financially and socially. Belarus today has to spend $ 1 m. daily on minimizing the consequences. The UN member states approved a proposal at the International Chernobyl Conference in Minsk in 2006 to make the third decade after Chernobyl the decade of recovery and SHD of the affected regions. But actually the Republic is left much alone to cope with difficulties.
***
WORLD WAR II, the name commonly given to the global conflict of 1939-1945. It was the greatest and most destructive war in history. The term GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR is used to describe the war of 1941 to 1945 between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, i.e. the Eastern Front of World War II.
On June 22, 1941 Belarus was among the first Union Republics to be attacked by Nazi Germany. From the very first day to the last Belarusian people fought heroically against enemies. They all rose up to defend their freedom and independence.
Over a million of Belarusians were in the Army. They took part in the battles of Moscow and Leningrad, at Stalingrad and the Kursk bulge, in the liberation of the Caucasus, Ukraine, the Crimea and the Baltic republics. Over 300,000 soldiers and officers, natives of Belarus were awarded the orders and medals, nearly 400 of them were conferred the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
A massive movement was launched on the occupied territories. It amounted to 374,000 people. It is not by chance that Belarus came to be called a partisan republic. Belarusian partisans opened one more front and helped the Army to win victory over the invaders.
Heroism and selflessness became ordinary standards of behaviour for millions of people in the field of battle and in the rear. All our heroes cannot be mentioned, but here are a few: Konstantin Zaslonov, who organized acts of sabotage at the Orsha railway station; Nikolai Gastello, who rammed his burning plane into a column of German tanks near Radashkovichi; Anna Mazanik and Mariya Osipova, who killed the Gauleiter of Belarus, the governor Wilhelm Kubbe.
Among our heroes were F. Smolyachkov, who killed 125 Hitlerites; general Davator, who was in command of a cavalry raid in the Nazi rear; the pilot A. Gorovets, who in a single air battle brought down 9 enemy planes at the cost of his own life; the defenders of the Brest Fortress who kept rebuffing in a besieged fortress for a month and many-many others. Belarus really appeared to be the nation that had the lion’s heart.
In the summer of 1944 Belarus was completely cleared of the enemy troops. It was impossible to enslave our people and country. But the victory over the fascist invaders was not an easy one. We lost nearly every third citizen of the Republic and more than half of our national wealth.
The contribution of the Belarusian people to the defeat of Nazism was enormous. Due to this fact the Republic of Belarus was invited in 1945 to become a founding member of a new international organization – the United Nations Organization (UNO), whose goal is to struggle for peace world over.
The Verb
Peter works as an engineer. He loves his work very much.
The child is sleeping now. He hasn’t woken up yet.
К простым относятся глаголы, состоящие из одной основы и не имеющие в своем составе ни префиксов, ни суффиксов: to sit, to go, to eat, to come, etc.
to work – работать work – работа
to play – играть a play – пьеса
to dry – сушить dry – сухой
Производные глаголы состоят из основы и суффиксов или префиксов: to deepen, to simplify, to disqualify, etc.
Сложные глаголы в английском языке состоят из двух основ, но выражают одно понятие: to broadcast, to whitewash, to kidnap.
Составные (фразовые) глаголы состоят из глагольной основы и предлога или наречия, которые могут отделяться друг от друга другими словами (switch on/off, cut down, look through, take after, etc.).
He lives in Minsk and goes to school number 50.
She left school last year and entered the university.
К ним относятся глаголы: to be, to have, to do, shall, should, will, would.
He is working now. I have answered all the questions. She doesn’t teach English. |
They will discuss the plan. He said that he would buy a car.
|
Глаголы to be, to have, to do могут быть как смысловыми так и вспомогательными.
(Modal Verbs) can, may, must, should, ought(to), have to, be to, need, shall, will
You may/must/have to go home.
You mustn’t/shouldn’t do it.
В функции связки могут выступать также глаголы to become, to get, to grow, to feel, to remain, to turn (в значении становиться), to look (в значении выглядеть) и др.
He is an economist. The girl grew pale. |
It gets dark early in autumn. The grass felt wet. |
(Non-Finite Forms).
Неличные формы глагола: инфинитив (The Infinitive), герундий (The Gerund) и причастия (The Participle I, II) выражают действие без указания лица, числа и наклонения.
действие – состояние;
предельность – непредельность;
Глаголы действия обозначают собственно действия, события (to go, to speak, to stay, etc.)
а) глаголы, выражающие эмоциональные состояния: to love, to hate, to fear, to care, to astonish, to admire, to want, etc.;
б) глаголы, выражающие умственные состояния: to think, to consider, to find, to know; to realize, to remember, to understand, to seem, etc.
в) глаголы, выражающие чувственные восприятия: to feel, to see, to hear, to smell, to taste, etc.
г) глаголы, выражающие различные отношения: to belong, to compare, to contain, to include, to lack, to possess, to exist, etc.
Предельными называются глаголы, в лексическом значении которых содержится представление о логическом пределе протекания действия (to break, to open, to destroy, to come, to approach, etc.)
Непредельными называются глаголы, в лексическом значении которых нет представления о каком-либо логическом пределе, и обозначаемое ими действие может длиться бесконечно (to go, to sit, to stand, to love, etc.)
Переходными называются глаголы, обозначающие действие, которое переходит на какой-либо объект, грамматически выполняющий функцию дополнения (to give the book, to see a man, to look at the picture, etc.)
Непереходными называются глаголы, обозначающие действие, которое не переходит ни на какой объект и, следовательно, не сопровождаются никакими дополнениями (to be interested in, to come, to stand, etc.)
I. The Infinitive |
II. The Past Indefinite |
III. Participle II (Past Participle) |
IV. Participle I (Present Participle) |
to ask to speak |
asked spoke |
asked spoken |
asking speaking |
(Irregular Verbs).
to close – closed – closed [d]
to stop – stopped – stopped [t], etc.

ГЛАГОЛЫ TO BE, TO HAVE
В отличие от других глаголов to be и to have являются полифункциональными, т. е.
I have a nice little cat.
He is at home now.
The boy is reading an interesting book.
The work has been done in time.
I am to take my exams in June.
Do you have to get up early? – Yes, I do. I have to get up early these days.
My parents are teachers.
The matter is that he is innocent.
There is a newspaper on the table.
Глагол to have употребляется в обороте have + N/Pronoun + Past Participle, для выражения действия, которое совершается не самим подлежащим, а кем-то другим для него.
I have my hair cut at this hairdresser’s. |
I’m going to have my car fixed. |
