1. About mу Family and myself

Let me introduce myself. My name is Yuriy Kostenko. I am fifteen years old. I am a school - leaver of the secondary school №2 of town Smila. My family lives in Smila in a private house. My parents have one more child besides me. Thus I have got my elder sister Tanya. She is 5 years my senior. So she is twenty already. She is a technologist by profession. She is married. Her husband is an engineer. They work at the baker's plant. They are three in the family. They have a daughter. So I have a niece. She is a lovely little kid with golden hair and dark blue eyes.

My parents are not old at all. Daddy is forty-four and Mum is four years his junior. My grandparents are already pensioners, but they are still full of life and energy. I have many relatives - aunts, uncles, and cousins.

My father is an engineer in computers and my mother is a teacher of English at school. They like their work very much.

I am fond of reading books on history and fiction. I am going in for sports. I like playing football, basketball and chess. Especially I am good at chess. I take part in different chess competitions, tournaments.

This year I finished nine forms of the secondary school and entered the mechanical department of the Technical Secondary School of Food Industry. So I am a student now. I like to repair different machines. And I shall work at the enterprises of our town as a technician - mechanic or I shall have my own workshop, my private business. Actually I study well. I am particularly interested in some special subjects, and in the foreign language. I am sure that English will help me greatly in my future life and work.

I have the opportunity to continue my studies at the Institute or University and become an engineer.

2. English

Different nationalities have different languages. The total number of languages is more than 2,500. The most wide-spread are English, Chinese, Spanish, French and others. Those languages are living languages. There are also dead languages (Latin, ancient Greek) which are no more means of communication.

Nowadays English is the most important and wide-spread language in the world. It is the state language in five countries: Great Britain, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Every well-educated person speaks English, because it is the language of international communication in many areas of life: trade, business, science, tourism, sport and entertainment. More and more people also need English for studying at universities and colleges. Our country needs good specialists in many spheres of economy. Ukraine has relations with many countries. And if you want to improve your knowledge, to be more competent in your job, you should know English so as to read literature on your specialty.

New ideas in science, technology and medicine change so quickly that it is impossible to translate everything into different languages. So most things are published in English, and if you want to keep up with the latest ideas in any subject, you need English.

Millions of people around the world want to learn English. Many of them came to Britain to study at language schools, especially in the summer. There are thousands of different schools. They offer courses for children, teen-agers and adults. There are courses in General English, Technical English, Business English, etc.
