John lennon
John Lennon was murdered just before II p.m. on December 8, 1980 outside the Dakota, an apartment building where he lived in New York City. He had just gotten out of a car and was walking to the entrance when a voice called, "Mr. Lennon". Lennon turned and was shot five times. The killer threw his gun down and stood there smiling. "Do you know what you just did?" shouted the doorman". I just shot John Lennon", the killer replied. Lennon was rushed to the hospital in a police car, but it was too late. The killer was 25 year-old Mark Chapman from Hawaii. Earlier the same evening he had asked Lennon for his autograph. In fact, he had been hanging around outside the apartment building for several days. Chapman was a fan of Lennon and had tried to imitate him in many ways. It is said that he even believed that he was John Lennon.
Text 2 (11) Read the text without a dictionary and retell it in English or in Ukrainian: the cinema in britain
In England the cinema is usually called "the pictures". The American name "the movies" is sometimes used. The first performance, or "showing" as it is called, begins about two o'clock in the afternoon and the show goes on from then until about half past ten. You can go in at any time and leave at any time. There is usually one main film, a shorter one, a news film, some advertisements and a "trailer" telling about the film for the next week.
Cinemas were more popular in the past than they are now. Many people went to the cinema two or three times a week, but today people like to stay at home to watch television, especially if it is cold and wet outside. The prices of cinema seats outside London are lower than the prices in London. Cinemas in England are usually larger and more comfortable than the theatres.

Charles Darwin
(1809—1882)
A hundred years ago people believed that plants and animals had always been as they are now. They thought that all the different sorts of living things, including men and women, were put in this world by some mysterious power a few thousand years ago.
It was Charles Darwin, born at Shrewsbury on the 12th of February 1809, who showed that this was just a legend. As a boy Darwin loved to walk in the country-side, collecting insects, flowers and minerals. He liked to watch his elder brother making chemical experiments. These hobbies interested him much more than Greek and Latin, which were his main subjects at school.
His father, a doctor, sent Charles to Edinburgh University to study medicine. But Charles did not like this.
He wrote a famous book “The Origin of Species”.
People who knew nothing about living things tried to make fun of Darvin’s ideas.
The development of science has shown that Darvin’s idea of evolution was correct.
