Cambridge

Cambridge is the second oldest University of Great Britain. The story of the University begins in 1209 when several hundred students and scholars came to the little town of Cambridge from Oxford. These students were all churchmen and had been studying in Oxford. Then one day a student killed a man of the town. The Mayor arrested three other students and hanged them. In protest, many students moved elsewhere, some coming to Cambridge. Of course, there were no Colleges in those early days. Students were of all ages and came from anywhere and everywhere. Some students from one part of the country grouped themselves together and these groups, called "Nations", often fought one another.

In 1284 Peterhouse, the oldest College in Cambridge was founded. Life in College was strict; students were forbidden to play games, to sing (except church music), to hunt, to fish or even to dance. All the lessons were in Latin. Now there are nineteen Colleges for men and two colleges for women. Women students do not play a very active part in University life at Cambridge. But they work harder than men and are not often seen outside of the classrooms.

Schools and sport

Most children in Australia go to district schools. But about twenty thousand children live too far from a district school. That's why they have to work through correspondence courses until the end of the secondary school stage. The children's work is checked by one or both parents and then posted to the capital. In addition to the correspondence courses there are twelve Schools of the Air, which cover twelve million square miles. The children are linked with each other and with their teachers using a two-way radio.

About six million Australians are active in some kind of sport. Games like tennis, football, hockey and cricket are very popular. And the Australian climate is very suitable for activities like swimming, surfing and sailing.

The greatest american

Americans are proud of the claim that in America a man may rise from the lowest to the highest position. Abraham Lincoln is the most famous example of the claim. He was born in 1809 in a small farm in Kentucky, but while Abraham was quite young, the family moved to Indiana. At the 8 years of age an axe was put into his hands and he worked with the rest of his family. He attended school less than one year. In 1830 Lincoln left his father's farm and went to Springfield, Illinois. Here he became a clerk in a store and worked hard to improve his education. He studied English Language and Literature. In 1836 he became a lawyer. In 1834 Lincoln was elected to the parliament of Illinois. He soon became a force in political life and in 1847 he went as a Congressman to the National Assembly in Washington. He was elected President of the United States in I860.

His main aim was to abolish slavery. Lincoln issued a proclamation setting free every man, woman and child in the USA. Slavery was ended.
