  1. Consult with text given below and tell your friends about the way of life of American people: About America and Americans

A typical feature of the America scene is the skyscraper with 70-80 storeys. One of the highest buikdings is the Empire State Building, which has 102 storeys.

Another typical feature of American life is the car. America is a nation on wheels. They are drive-in post-offices, drive-in banks, drive-in cafeterias, where one can carry through one’s business without getting out of the car. There are even drive-in cinemas.

The American Constitution is of a federal nature. The federal legislative power is vested in the Congress. The Congress consists of the House of Representatives (the Lower House) with over four hundred members elected by the people for two years and the Senate (the Upper House) with one hundred members elected on the basis of two members for each State. The Senators are elected for a six-year term and one third of them are renewed every two years. The executive power is vested in the President of the United States, elected for a four-year term of office through indirect election by the people. The President’s powers are great. He nominates the Cabinet of Ministers, who are responsible only to him. American politics are based on the two-party system (Democratic Party, Republican Party).

  1. Parties:

There are tremendous differences in the ability and desire for social life on the part of students. Some of them just aren’t interested in ‘social life’. Leave them alone. Most children are willing to have fun.

Tick the kinds of parties you have been to. Translate them into your language.

Trading partners: there are more boys than girls and the boys cut in on couples who are

dancing. It’s also called ‘butting in’ or ‘trapping’. It can be overdone.

Paul Jones: upon desire or upon a signal everyone switches partners.

The informal Dance-Talk-Eat-Party: the boys form a big circle outside a big circle formed by the girls

and the circle then rotate in opposite directions until a signal, when

the boy dances with the girl he finds facing him.

Girl’s choice: for such a party you need a congenial group that likes to dance; good late

Records; and plenty of food.

Cutting: the boys and girls go to opposite sides of the room and when the music

Starts each girl chooses a boy to dance with.

The Large Dance-Talk-Eat Party: the boys choose balloons inside each of which the name of a girl

has been put. Each boy dances with the girl whose name he finds

inside.

Program dance: here the guests may not all know each other quite well. It’s better to plan a

few mixers.

Balloon dance : each guest chooses half a picture or a name (Romeo-Juliet) to be paired

with the other half.

Multiplication dance: each boy is given two programs (one for himself and one for a girl) well in

advance of the dance. The boy is to fill his girl’s program with the names

of boys who will dance with her; and his own program with the names of

girls with whom he will dance.

Matching dance: one couple starts to dance and then, when the music stops, the boy and the

girl each finds a new partner to dance with; the music stops again and the

four dancers now find four more partners; and so on.
