Ex.2. a) Fill in the gaps with the verbs in necessary tense forms.

Nissan UK Limited was founded in 1969. At first it (to be) just a trading company. It (to import) cars from Japan and (to sell) them in the UK.

Ex.3. Rewrite the sentences into the Reported Speech.

  1. “It’s important to keep a positive atmosphere during negotiations,” the chairman said.

  2. “ The partners set goals, suggest alternatives and say what they want,” commented the correspondent.

  3. “Setting the agenda for the next meeting is the most important job,” they said.

  4. “They made lots of suggestions,” reported Tom.

  5. Manager said: “ The production of the factory increased when ten new workers were hired”.

  6. They answered: “ Nations without technological resources cannot produce their own computer systems”.

Ex.8. You attended a meeting at work which your friend was unable to come to. Report what Mr. Baker, the sales manager, said.

Mr Baker: “ I talked to Mr Jones the other day. He has done all the research. But I’m not happy about the price. It all sounds too expensive. I’m trying to reduce it slightly and I’ll let you know if it’s possible”.

Example: Well, what has happened at the meeting?

Well, Mr Baker said he had talked to Mr Jones the other day.

And?

He said he had done all the research.

What about the price? Why? What is he going to do? Do you

think he can?

Ex.9. Change the main clause to the past and adjust the dependent clause as necessary.
