Unit I
Text a. Means of Communication
Nowadays our life is impossible without daily exchange of information between companies and firms, businessmen and research centers, banks and other institutions. Corporations and sole traders make contracts, send inquiries and offers, catalogues and technical characteristics of different goods, banks transfer money, dissatisfied parties send their complaints to the Arbitration Commission. For this various means of communication are used. Traditional means of communication are letters and telegrams/cables. But letters are a slow means and telegrams are not good for many-paged documents.
Over the last years, more and more business persons resort to the e-mail and Internet. The worldwide computer network known as Internet connects millions of people worldwide. The Internet is a loose association of thousands of networks and millions of computers across the world that work together to share and transmit information. By connecting to each other these networks, create a superfast pipeline that crisscrosses the United States and extends to Europe, Japan, mainland Asia and the rest of the world. Millions of messages run through the electronic mail (e-mail). Many governments provide electronic services (e-services) and communicate with customers on-line.
Agencies as well as universities are actively involved in running and expanding the Internet and thus helping everyone to share and access data and programs.
Nowadays one can send documents by:
Surface mail. It’s the cheapest way of sending documents. It takes from 2 to 6 weeks for international delivery.
Airmail. It’s reasonably cheap, allows from 5 to 6 days for delivery.
Express mail. It takes from 2 to 3 days for international delivery. The sender pays $5 express charge in addition to ordinary postage.
Courier mail. The letter/ printed matter is delivered by private courier company. It takes 36-48 hours for international delivery. Courier is very expensive but guaranteed.
Fax is instant and comparatively cheap – the price of a phone call – but not too good for long documents.
E-mail. It is instant and comparatively cheap - the price of a phone call too. It downloads a document from the sender’s computer via modem into the recipient’s computer. E-mail is ideal for sending documents that are a) very urgent, b) need changing.
