Odessa national academy of law

The Odessa National Academy of Law (ONAL) was founded in December, 1997 according to the Cabinet of Ministers Decree on the basis of the Institute of Law in the structure of the Odessa State University of Mechnikov. The establishment of the Academy was dictated by the objective necessity to improve the law education in the region and to satisfy the increasing necessity in training specialists for the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Prosecutor’s General Office, Customs Service, authority bodies of the southern regions of Ukraine.

The ONAL has 7 faculties:

• judicial- administrative faculty;

• the faculty of civil and economic justice;

• the faculty of international legal relations and judicial journalism;

• socially legal faculty;

• the faculty of advocacy;

• the faculty of extramural and evening education;

• the faculty of postgraduate education.

There are two Institutes in the structure of the Academy: the Institute of Prosecution and Investigation and the Institute of Training Professional Justices. The Academy has also some educational centers in other cities (Nikolayev, Nickopol, Sympheropol, Kryviy Rih, Cherkasy and Chernivtsi).

There are twenty-five chairs at the Academy that ensure a vast wide range curriculum.

The educational establishment occupies a modern ten-storey building, some two- and four-storey buildings. There are also some additional premises, hostels, and a complex of summer and winter sport facilities. The Academy library is considered to be one of the best in the city.

The Academy maintains and constantly extends foreign relations with many countries throughout the world, such as Great Britain, Germany, Austria, the USA, Hungary, Switzerland, Canada, Moldova, Azerbaidjan, Russia, Italy. It has different exchange programmes. The Odesa National Academy of Law is one of the members of the European Universities Association.

Nowadays ONAL is the center of juridical education, culture and science of Ukraine, a leading institution of higher learning. According to the decision of the State accreditation commission of the Ministry of education of Ukraine the Academy provides training specialists according to the highest 4^th level of accreditation. In October 1991 the ONAL was acknowledged as a winner in nomination- the best Higher Educational Institution of Law.

The total number of students at the Academy is over 6,000. The teaching staff includes over 150 Doctors of Sciences, Professors, Assistant Professors, Senior teachers, teachers and Probationer teachers. Many prominent specialists work and teach here: Doctors of Sciences, professors Kivalov S.V., Chervoniy Y.S., Orzhikh M.P., Bahriy-Shahmatov L.V., Baymuratov M.O., Dodin Y.V., Kormich L.I., Shelest D.S., Tuliakov V.O., Pohribniy O.O., Syrota I.M., Kharitonov Y.o., Alenin Y.P., Saniakhmetova I.O., Chanisheva H.I., Ivakin O.A., Associate professors Bekerska D.A., Cherkes M.Y., Hlynianiy V.A., etc. There are many famous lawyers, deputies of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,, the chairmen of the state authority bodies, judicial law-enforcing bodies , etc.

After the fourth year of study the students are given the degree of a Bachelor, after the 5th year – that of a Specialist and after the 6th year they are given the degree of a Master.

The basic activity directions of the Academy are determined by the Academy Statute. The Academy is headed by its president, the Doctor of Law, professor Kivalov S.V.
