Студент X, овладевший банальным вопросом, перевел бы эти предложения так:

I don't know where do they live. I can't understand what does he want. I don't remember what is his name.

И был бы неправ. Чтобы понять, почему это он опять неправ, давайте отбросим все лишнее и посмотрим на сами банальные вопросы: _____________ 1. Hurricane by Bob Dylan.

Где они живут? Where do they live?

Чего он хочет? What does he want?

Как его зовут? What is his name?

Посмотрите внимательно. Может быть, вы заметите принципиальную разницу между банальными вопросами и теми, которые предлагались вашему вниманию первоначально.

Разница в том, что в конце банальных вопросов стоит знак вопроса. А в конце вопросов вида "Я не знаю, где они живут" стоит точка.

Не отмахивайтесь от этого различия. Это не мелочь. Точка превратила наше предложение из вопросительного ("Чего он хочет?") в утвердительное ("Я не знаю, чего он хочет").

В утвердительном же предложении никакой инверсии делать не надо. Вот как они будут выглядеть:

I don't know where they live.

I can't understand what he wants.

I don't remember what his name is.

Пока все не так плохо, кроме неприятной необходимости ставить is в конец предложения, что психологически тяжело. Но привыкнуть к этому можно:

Neither you Simon nor the fifty thousand Nor the Romans nor the Jews (...) Understand what power is Understand what glory is.¹

Банальный вопрос был бы: What is power? What is glory?

Замените сами косвенные вопросы на банальные. Та часть предложения, которую необходимо переделать, подчеркнута. Обратите также внимание на слова, благодаря которым косвенный вопрос появляется в предложениях: они выделены курсивом.

Пока ничего нового не было, кроме некоторой неловкости, связанной с отсутствием инверсии после вопросительного слова. Единственный вопрос, который мог у вас возникнуть, - это куда девать предлог. Вы конечно сразу поняли, о каком предлоге я говорю: о том, который относится к вопросительному слову и в русском предложении стоит перед этим словом, а в английском уносится в конец:

What are you talking about?

В косвенном вопросе ничего нового с этим предлогом не происходит. Он стоит там же, где и в банальном вопросе:

I can't understand what you are talking about.

You said "Here's your mirror, and your ball and jacks"

But they're not what I came/or, and I'm sure you see that too.¹

Кроме того, косвенный вопрос может быть частью банального. Единственная задача - увидеть, какая часть предложения является собственно вопросом, а какая к ней прилагается.

When I get off of this mountain, do you know where I want to go?²

В конце стоит вопросительный знак благодаря do you know (банальный вопрос с инверсией). Where I want to go-косвенный вопрос, он вызван словом know и не инверсируется. _________________ 1. For You by Bruce Springsteen. 2. Up On Cripple Creek by The Band.

Can you show me where it hurts?¹

To же самое, только косвенный вопрос появился благодаря show.

Точно так же все происходит, если косвенный вопрос комбинируется с think-question:

I know where you think you're going I know what you came here for.²

Вероятно, вы уже заметили, что все косвенные вопросы, которые мы рассматривали до сих пор, вводились вопросительным словом. А как быть, если вопросительного слова нет, то есть мы имеем дело с Yes-No-Question?

Do you love me? I don't know....

Если бы у нас было вопросительное слово, мы сейчас поставили бы его и спокойно выстроили все предложение с прямым порядком слов. Например,

Why do you love me? I don't know why you love me.

Сразу напрашивается мысль, что раз никакого вопросительного слова нет, то можно без него прекрасно обойтись:

I don't know you love me.

Но так, увы, не получается. Если у нас нет вопросительного слова, то нам попросту нечем вводить косвенный вопрос. Придаточное предложение, видите ли, должно _____________________ 1. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. 2. Where Do You Think You're Going? by Dire Straits.

быть чем-то введено, а единственный союз, который можно выбрасывать - это, как вам известно, союз that:

I know you love me = I know that you love me

Соответственно, наше предложение I don't know you love me = I don't know that you love me переводится как "я не знаю, что ты меня любишь". Согласитесь, что смысл получился несколько иной, чем тот, к которому мы стремились (я не знаю, любишь ли ты меня). Следовательно, это "ли" должно быть чем-то выражено. Это что-то и будет вводить наш косвенный вопрос.

Таких слов два. Это if или whether. If при этом не имеет ничего общего с тем if, которому была посвящена предыдущая глава.

I don't know if you love me. I don't know whether you love me.

По этому образцу делаются все косвенные вопросы без вопросительного слова.

I wanna know if it's you I don't trust 'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself.¹

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can.²

But I can't think for you You'll have to decide Whether Judas Iscariot Had God on his side.³

Whether и if в принципе взаимозаменяемы, если вопрос не является альтернативным. Если же там есть слово "или", то ставится именно whether, а не if:

I don't know whether you love me or not. I don't know whether or not you love me. To protect you an' defend you Whether you are right or wrong.¹

When you played your cards with Willie, you never really knew Whether he was bluffin' or whether he was true.²
