Universities in England
Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest university towns in England. The University of Oxford was founded hundreds of years ago. It consists of some colleges. “The University “is only an administrative center which arranges lectures for all the students of the colleges, holds examinations and gives degrees.
The universities grant their own degrees. After the first degree course of 3 years a bachelor degree is awarded on the results of exams. BA or B.Sc. stands for Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. A Master degree is usually awarded after a further year or two. (MA or M.Sc.) The highest degree is the Doctor of Philosophy awarded for research and the submission of thesis.
The tutorial system is one of the ways in which Oxford and Cambridge differ from all other English Universities. Every student has a tutor, who plans his work and acts as a parent to the student away from home. He gives advice and helps in time of need. Each week some students come to see their tutor and he discusses with them the work they have done.
