Berlin the two-heart city(Part II)
Stock of museum treasures in Berlin is of indisputable world significance. It comprises archaeological collection from all over the Mediterranean area and Asia, the samples of European art and culture.
Museum Island hosting five significant edifices, built in the form of an antique temple complex, is one of the most beautiful pearls in the necklace of the city objects of interest. These are: the Ancient and the Contemporary Museums, the Egyptian Museum, the Bode-Museum, the Perha-mon-Museum and others, where pictorial and sculptural masterpieces by the masters of Antique art, Middle Ages as well as the modern trends and styles are exhibited. By any means, not every capital can boast of such a unique treasure as Perham Altar and a Babylon street with the famous Ishtar Gate. Neo-classical Perhamon-Museum is the most significant one among the others, where the world known Perham Altar of the II century BC is exhibited. The altar devoted to Athena and Zeus was considered from the ancient times to be one of the seven world miracles. The visitors are amazed and delighted by the supernatural sizes of Olympic gods and Titans fighting on the frieze of the majestic construction of the podium. When one is standing in front of the altar, he gets the impression that the Ancient Greek legends are coming to life and the fierce combat is being launched out just before his very eyes. Caesar and Cleopatra, the famous ancient loving couple, have joined just here, in the Ancient collection of Perhamon-Museum.
Visiting of Brandenburg-Prussian Crown Treasure-house can undoubtedly produce one of the most striking impressions in Berlin. The Egyptian Museum, where Pharaoh-reformer Ehnathon managed to share a house with his beautiful wife Nephertity again, is situated opposite Sharlottenburg Castle. The marvelous gypsum bust of Nephertity amazes by its beauty and spirituality up to now.
The Berggruen collection found its place in the XX Century Gallery, where numerous works by Picasso, Braque, and Klee, van Gogh, along with the works of African sculptures are being exhibited.
Like other Germans citizens of Berlin are restraint, punctual, incredibly dilligent people, though the ones, who can relax and have a good time. One should note, however, that the "typical" German does not exist. Different laws were in act, different troops occupied the western sectors of the city and the Soviet troops gained the Eastern Berlin under their control. The city lived about half a century in such a way, being divided into two parts by the ideological barrier (and later by the stone wall).
The Berlin Wall and the surrounding areas have changed beyond recognition after the reunification of both Germanies. Only the grey Reichstag has remained majestic, maintaining its respectable self-importance. The Brandenburg Gate (1788-1791), no more dividing Berliners into "western" and "eastern" ones, is the city visiting card. Up to now every school-boy knows that Saxonia stretches from this mountain up to the next one and Turingia lies from that mountain up to the other one already. That is why a German will never call himself just German. He will say: "I am Schwab" or "Franconian", or "Westphalian", or "Bavarian"'. Natives of different lands banter one another, trying to find out typical drawbacks and sometimes the merits as well.
Berlin is a city of youth. Strange as it may seem, the tastes and feelings of the youth from Prague and Berlin, New-York and Warsaw, London, Dublin and Moscow are absolutely the same. That is why the life in the night clubs is in full swing till morning, boisterous mobs never stop; harsh "hip-hop", "deep house" and rhythmic South American beat are sounding there.
Berlin is also the city of numerous fairs, festivals and concerts. The annual Berlin film festival held in February is the second largest in the world. The city parade is conducted in June on the Christopher Street Day. The grand Love Parade takes place at the beginning of July. Berlin Jazz festival gets together jazz bands from all over the world in October. At December the citizens of Berlin decorate every centimetre of their houses and streets with luminous garlands and variegated lanterns, make amazingly jolly feast of lights and fireworks on Christmas time.
There are currently 3.5 million of citizens in Berlin. The two cities merged into one. Each of the cities has its atmosphere, its own spirit and sights.
