(The Sequence of Tenses)

Правило согласования времён обычно действует в сложноподчинённых предложениях с придаточными предложениями следующих типов: дополнительных придаточных предложениях (Object Clauses), придаточных предложениях времени (Adverbial Clauses of Time), цели (Adverbial Clauses of Purpose), следствия (Adverbial Clauses of Result), условных предложениях первого типа (Adverbial Clauses of Condition Type I).

I think you are right.

Do you know why he was absent yesterday?

I’ll tell you what you will have to do.

(Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, Past Perfect Continuous, Conditional (Future in the Past)).

I didn’t know he could speak English.

He told me that you were writing your composition.

I didn’t know she had gone away.

They said that they had been walking for an hour when they saw the man.

Conditional (Future in the Past).

I hoped he would come.

I didn’t expect you would be late.
