GLOSSARY
Field fortifications are constructed to strengthen the natural defenses of
the ground features. Field fortifications include foxholes, obstacles, trenches, gun emplacements, etc. A hasty field fortification is one made quickly, when under fire or threat of immediate attack. A deliberate field fortification is made more strongly and carefully, when not in contact with the enemy.
Emplacement is a prepared position for one or weapons or pieces of
equipment, for protection against hostile fire or bombardment, and from which the units can execute their mission.
Shelter is any natural or artificial cover, which protects troops, ammuni-
tion, or supplies from gunfire, gas or aerial bombs.
Heavy shellproof sheter is a shelter that can protect against continuous
bombardment by shells of 8-in or larger caliber.
Trench is a narrow ditch with embankment for protection of men while
firing or moving from one part of the position to another.
25
Foxhole is a small pit used for cover, usually for one or two men, and so
constructed that an occupant can fire effectively from it.
Berm is the space between the edge of an excavation and the embank-
ment formed of the excavated earth.
Parapet is a bank of earth above ground level formed with the spoil from
an excavation. The term “front parapet” usually denotes one over which a weapon can be fired. A rear parapet is not, as a rule, designed for weapon firing.
Exercise 3. Read the following text and translate it into Russian at sight: Organization of Ground
Organization of the ground is the use and improvement of the natural de-
fensive qualities of the terrain to the best defensive advantage. This includes the
laying of mines, erection of artificial obstacles, camouflage, protective construction of fortifications (ftns), and imrovement of observation and fire.
Fortifications
All fortifications may be subdivided into field and permanent ftns. Field ftns include foxholes, obstacles, trenches, weapon emplacements, etc. They are of two general types: hasty field ftns (those constructed quickly, under fire or threat of immediate attack), and deliberate field ftns (made more strongly and
carefully, when not in contact with the enemy or developed gradually from hasty field ftns).
Among field ftns emplacements and shelters are of prime importance.
An emplacement is a prepared position for weapons to provide protection against hostile fire and from which they can execute their missions.
The basic defensive position of a rifleman is the foxhole. In a sustained defense foxholes are are developed into trenches. The trenches are excavated as fighting positions, they are to connect individual foxholes, weapon emplace- ments, and shelters in the progressive development of defensive area. They provide protection and concealment for personnel moving between fighting positions or in or out of the area.
Open wpn emplacements are excavated for mgs, AT wpns, morts, and other wpns.
Covered wpn emplacements made of wood, concrete, reinforced concrete or even armor are more powerful nature than open ones. Examples of such emplacements are bunkers, pillboxes, and gun tarrets.
Excavation, erection, installation, and construction of roof and entrance can be completed in less than 10 hours. The bunker can be erected by means of handtools only.
Shelters are constructed primarily to protect soldiers, equipment, and supplies from enemy actions and bad weather conditions. Shelters differ from em- placements because there are no provisions for firing weapons from them. They are constructed near the firing positions to supplement them.
26
Shelters are classified according to depth as surface, cut-and-cover, and cave shelters, and according to resistance to fire as splinterproof, light shell proof, and heavy shellproof shelters.
Obstaces
Doctrinally, obstacles are supposed to delay, stop or canalize an attacker inflicting losses on his manpower and damaging his equipment. They may be
either natural – gullies, streams, or jungles or artificial. Obstacles become valua- ble only when they are coupled with firepower and form an integral part of a
barrier.
An artificial obstacle is any manmade object construsted to hinder movement. Artificial obstacles include minefields, AT ditches, contaminated areas, hedgehogs, road crators, barbed wire, demolished bridges, and inundations.
Minefields
Minefields are not only an obstacle to the advance of the enemy but unlike obstacles of passiv nature, they can also inflict severe casualties; therefore, the minefields are considered the best form of artificial obstacles. The installation of minefields changes favorable one and materially enhances the strength of the defensive system.
In addition to conventional mines the US Engineers are trained to install and execute firing of Atomic Demolition Munitions (ADM) for nuclear cratering
and radioactive contamination of the ground. The nuclear cratering can produce obstacles far more formidable than other artificial obstacles.
Barbed Wire Entanglement
Barbed wire entanglement is simple in design, flexible and effective against personnel. It can be used to impede movement of vehicles.
Note. Standard barbed wire is a 2-strand twisted № 12 steel wire with 4point barbs at 10-cm (4-in) spacing. Barbed steel tape can be used in place of standard barbed wire in most cases except when it is to be repeatedly recovered
and reused.
The principle advantage of barbed tape are its size and weight. For equal lengths, barbed tape occupies a third of the space and weighs a third as much as the standard barbed wire.
Note. A caltrop has four sharpened prongs oriented so that one prong always be vertical regardless of how the caltrop lands; caltrops are employed as antiper-
sonnel (AP) obstacles either by themselves or in conjunction with barbed wire.
Caltrops are designed to cause injury by penetrating the footgear of a man who steps on one. Serious injury will result if a man quickly falls to the ground to avoid SA or Arty fire. Caltrops can be dispensed by hand, from the rear of a truck, or from fixed or rotary winged aircraft.
Antivehicle obstacles are used to immobilize or delay enemy wheeled or tracked vehicles long enough for AT weapon to destroy them. Antivehicle ditch-
27
es, craters, long hudles, cribs, steel, concrete, and log posts, abatis, hedgehogs are classified as antivehicle obstacles.
COMMENTARY

Exercise 8. Get prepared tomake a two-way translation of the following text quickly by ear:
The basic defensive position for the individual rifleman is the foxhole which may be prone, kneeling or standing.
A standing foxhole must have a fire step from which a standing man should be able to fire, pits to catch water and grenades, and parapet with a berm to rest the elbows and weapon on when firing.
29
The tasks which can be accomplished by the combat engineer vehicle under hostile fire include destruction or removal of roadblocks, obstacles, constracts Tk and gn emplacements, and protective shelters.
Exercise 9. Translate the following text in a written form:
A. Two types of emplacement are used for 81 mm mortar. The open type
consists of a rectangular pit large enough to accommodate the mortar, the gunner, and the assistant gunner. A parapet is made around the position by using spoil. Other members of the squad prepare foxholes near the emplacement and additional ammunition is placed in nearby shelter. In the event the firing position of the mortar is in defilade, a preferable type of emplacement is the two-
foxhole type. In this position only the base plate is dug in, the crew operating from foxholes on each side of the weapon.
B. New Mine Neutralization System
The Surface Launched Fuel Air Explosive (SLFAE) mine neutralization system is currently under development by the US Army and Navy. It will be em-
loyed by combat engineers to breach minefields in support of armor and infantry
attacks and in pursuit operations.
Consisting of a 30-tube armored launcher mounted on the M-548 cargo carrier, the all-weather, day and night system fires a fuel air explosive warhead that can
breach minefields from defilade or concealed positions at distances up to 1,000 m.
Fuel air explosive munitions employ foliage discriminating fuzes that ac- tuate on target contact and disperse highly volotile liquid chemicals into aerosol
clouds. Subsequent detonation of the cloud produces an ovepressure that neutralizes or detonates landmines and explosive booby traps.
The launcher can fire single rounds or ripple fire all or any selected number of the 30 rounds.
C. FAMECE New Item
A new entry in the field of military construction equipment called FAMECE (family of Military Engineer Construction Equipment) has been developed by the Lockheed Missile and Space Company. It is now undergoing testing and evaluation at Aberdee Proving Ground.
A complete FAMECE unit is made up of a standard power module and separate interchangeable work units. Coupling and uncoupling these units will take one man less than 5 minutes.
30
When complete, the work unit will include: scrapers, graders, pumpers, louders, compactors, and water distributors. FAMECE is designed to be airtranspotable and airdroppable from a C-130 aircraft.
Exercise 10. Translate the following text from Russian into English in a
written form:
Exercise 11. Act as a intepreter:
Q: Какими свойствами должны обладать естественные препятствия? A: Desirable characteristics of natural obstacles are ease of conversion into a
more effective obstacles with a minimum of effort, materials and time; loca- tion where observation and defensive fires can prevent enemy breaching; and
difficulty of bypassing.
A: The most effective natural obstacles against tanks are steep slopes, unfrozen
swamps and broad, deep streams. Rice paddies, lava fields, and similar areas can also be formidable obstacles.
