Exercise 9. Get prepared to make a two-way translation of the following
text quikly by ear:
Early msls were powered by liquid-propellant rocket motors.
Thus, liquid-propellant rkt mtrs required lengthy fuelling. Solid-propellant mtrs are generally more reliable and economical than liquid-fuelled ones, though their energy per unit weight tends to be lower.
More recently, however, dual-thrust rkt mtrs have been developed.
Msls can be equipped with nuclear, HE and cml whds.

The ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) Family of Munitions (AFOM) variants are long range, all weather, day and night, missile systems. Their mission is general support or general support - reinforcing. The AFOM has several variants: Block I, I A, II, IIA and III B are in service now. All AFOM are equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS). They can be launched from MLRS or HIMARS.
Block I and Block I A missiles are employed against soft stationary targets. Block IA has a lighter payload, but increased Global Positioning System (GPS) accuracy. They carry the anti-personnel anti-materiel (APAM) warhead with M74 bomblets. Maximum range of Block I is 190km. Maximum range of Block IA is 300km.
Block II and Block 2A missiles are armed with BAT Brilliant Antiarmor submunitions. Maximum range of Block 2 is 190km. Maximum range of Block 2A is 300km. They can attack hard or soft, moving or cold stationary targets. ATACMS missiles contain a NAVSTAR system receiver, which provides greater accuracy. BAT submunitions have 4 wings with acoustic sensors on the tips and a passive infrared seeker in the nose.
Block III B entered service a few years ago. The missiles are equipped with the penetrator warhead to engage underground command posts, bunkers, hangars and other high payoff targets. Their range is 500km.

Exercise 12. Act as an interpreter: Q:
A: Well, I see what you mean. Really, designs of modern missiles are many and
diverse, so they come in a wide variety of forms. However all share ana- loguos basic components. They are the propulsion system, airframe, guidance and control system (if the missile is guided), nozzle assembly and payloud.
A: This is a frequently asked question as only few people know the proper
meaning of the word. The term airframe means the assembled principa structural components of a missile or rocket, less propulsion system, guidance and control, electronic equipment, and payload. Actally it is the body of the weapon with airfoils. So, in some instances the body is a synonym for the term airframe.
A: The missile airframe must meet the following principal requirements: be rig-
id enough and at the same time light in weight and streamlined; provide easy access to any component; and easy to assemble and disassemble.
A: In an aircraft is usually the cargo or passengers transported. In a military mis-
sile or rocket the payload is the warhead, its container, and activating devices. In other rockets it may be a telecommunication satellite or any other cargo delivered to the orbit.
A: Yes you’ve got me right. But I’d like to specify that the payload has a wider
meaning and contains in addition to the warhead its container, activating davices, guidance system and such penetration aids as decoys, chaff and so on. As for their designation which is to inflict damage they are really synonyms.
A: Modern missiles can be equipped with chemical, biological nuclear and con-
ventional warheads. A: It depends on the design. But commonly they are housed in the nose of a
missile. If it is a long-range ballistic missile the payload is mounted on the
final stage and termed re-entry vehicle.

GLOSSARY
Guidance is the process of directing the movement of an aeronautical ve-
hicle or space vehicle, with particular reference to the selection of flight path.
Active homing is the homing of an aerodynamic or space vehicle in
which energy waves (such as radar) are transmitted from the target and reflected back to the vehicle to direct the vehicle towards the target.
Beam-rider guidance is a system for guiding aircraft or spacecraft in
which a craft follows a radar beam, light beam, or other kind of beam along the desired path. Also called “beam-climber guidance”.
Command control is a system whereby functions are performed as the
result of transmitted signals.
Command guidance is the guidance of spacecraft or a rocket by means
of electronic signals sent to receiving device in the vehicle.
Exercise 3. Read and translate the text from English into Russian at sight: Guidance System
Missiles are free to move in three dimensions. The missile can make three kinds of rotary movements: pitch, roll and yaw. The steering devices of the missile govern rotary motions about any of three axes (lateral, longitudinal and vertical). The forward movement is provided by the propulsion system.
97
The guidance and control section in the missile provides all navigation, guidance, autopilot, and internal communications functions while in flight and for all ground operations. The inertial sensors, electronics, and software provide continuous determination of missile position, attitude, and motion. Guided missile flight control includes all the processes of attitude and path control. The four basic processes in missile guidance and control are tracking, computing, directing and steering.
Tracking determines the relative position of the missile with respect to the launcher, the target and the flight path.
Computing calculates the directing signals for the missile, the intelligence is supplied by the tracking devices.
Directing sends the intelligence to the control units within the missile.
Steering changes the flight path.
The control section assembly positions the missile fins and provides electrical power while in flight. This assembly consists of a control actuation set, electronics and batteries, four fin assemblies, an electrical harness, and a machined boattail structure. The fins are folded when the missile is installed in the Enclosure Assembly Launch Pod. Electro-mechanical actuators automatically unfold and lock the springloaded fins in flight position when the missile leaves the pod. They control the missile during flight.
According to guidance and control missiles are subdivided into three groups: using inertial (preset) guidance, command (remote-control) guidance and homing. A missile system may incorporate all the types of guidance at a time: command guidance in the launch phase, inertial guidance in midcourse and
homing guidance in the final stage. In the beam rider guidance system a beam of radiation is propagated from a guidance point and conveyed to a guided missile
to keep it automatically centered in this beam.
Homing systems of missile guidance are subdivided into active, semiactive and passive.
In active guidance the source illuminating the target and the receiver receiving the returned echoes are carried within the missile.
In semiactive guidance the missile receiver utilizes radiation from the target illuminated from a source outside the missile.
In passive guidance the missile receiver uses natural radiation from the target.
Homing systems may be classified as either pursuit homing or lead homing systems. In the pursuit homing the missile is pointed at the target all the time. In the lead system the homing scanner determines both the range and bearing on the target. As the missile and the target proceed along their respective course lines the angle between them changes at some rate. The computer calculates this rate of change and
gives a solution to reduce the angular rate to zero to the missile control unit.
In command guidance system a control station obtains information about the position of the target and the missile and sends commands to the missile to direct it toward the target along a desired trajectory.
98
Inertial guidance system uses a predetermined path which is adjusted after
launching by devices within the missile. Guidance is accompanied by three ac-
celerometers which measure the distance in three perpendicular directions in space and compare it with the programmed distances.
Preset guidance system is self-contained. The intelligence to give the course and termination of the flight is set into the missile before its launching. The system defines heading, altitude, time or length of flight, and programmed turns.

Exercise 9. Get prepared to make two-way translation of the following text by ear:
The four basic processes in missile guidance are tracking, computing, directing, and steering.
Homing systems may be classified as active, semiactive and passive.
In semi-active homing the missile receiver utilizes radiation from the target, which has been illuminated from a source other than one in the missile.
In active homing, the receiver which receives the returned echoes is also carried within the missile.

Laser-guided weapon
In 1962, the US Army began research into laser guidance systems and by 1967 the USAF had conducted a competitive evaluation leading to full development of the world's first laser-guided bomb, the BOLT-117, in 1968. All such bombs work in much the same way, relying on the target being illuminated, or "painted," by a laser target designator on the ground or on an aircraft. They have
the significant disadvantage of not being usable in poor weather where the target
illumination cannot be seen, or where it is not possible to get a target designator near the target. The laser designator sends its beam in a coded series of pulses so the bomb cannot be confused by an ordinary laser, and also so multiple designators can operate in reasonable proximity.
The first large-scale use of smart weapons came in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm when they were used by coalition forces against Iraq. Even so, most of the air-dropped ordnance used in that war was "dumb," although the percentages are biased by the large use of various (unguided) cluster bombs. La-
ser-guided weapons were used in large numbers during the 1999 Kosovo War, but their effectiveness was often reduced by the poor weather conditions preva- lent in the southern Balkans.
Exercise 11. Translate the following text in a written form from Russian into English:
