D. This type of advertising certainly reaches its audience because people
can’t switch off or throw it away. However, consumers are usually moving at the
time, so they see the ad for about two or three seconds. It is normally used to
remind consumers the message which other media have already communicated
to them.

Task 2.4 Read and write short definitions of the words in bold in the text
about below. Use the dictionary but do not discuss while writing. In turns read
your definitions. Your peer should guess the term being defined.
MARKETING AND ADVERTISING
Marketing is the process of identifying customers’ needs and satisfying
those needs with appropriate products.
There are several aspects to good marketing. The first is market research:
finding out what people want. Secondly the company must provide consumers with suitable products, which means selling existing products, and when
necessary, creating new ones through new product development. The company
must regularly examine its product range in relation to the actual and potential
market. It has to promote the products so customers know about them, and
then organise distribution so the products actually reach the customers. Last
but not least it must make sure that profit is generated for shareholders.
Market research is part of a customer-based approach, which tries to find
out what customers want and makes products which match those requirements.
A product-based approach tries to persuade customers to buy what the company
produces.
The marketing mix is all the things a company does to market its products,
including:
a) the product offering, i.e. 1 the product range, the style of product and the
ability to provide new products when needed;
b) the pricing structure, including bulk discounts;
c) promotion, including advertising, introductory offers, product placement,
loss leaders, packaging, sales promotion, merchandising, and public relations;
d) place or distribution;
e) customer services, especially after sales service and guarantees.
Advertising is the business of informing customers about the existence
and qualities of products or services, principally through written and

visual presentation in the media or on hoardings. The advert is successful if
customers buy the advertiser’s product rather than products of competitors.
Advertising also aims to encourage brand loyalty in order to increase or
maintain market share.
Integrated marketing is an approach to business which sees attracting and
retaining customers as the most important function. It emphasises that all the
activities of a company have marketing implications, from the way the telephone is answered, to the time it takes to make a delivery. All other functions
(production, finance and personnel) are therefore subordinate to the marketing
function.
Many of the first drama serials about everyday life on US radio and
television were sponsored by manufacturers of soap and washing powders,
who advertised their products during the commercial breaks. That’s why the
TV serials are called ‘soaps’.

Task 2.5 Read what customers say in the customer satisfaction survey.
Match each statement to one of the words in bold in the text ‘Marketing and
Advertising’. e.g. 1 – merchandising
1 This is the new point-of-sale material you asked for.
2 I love the new box design, and I think it’s an excellent idea to shrinkwrap them too.
3 There’s nothing wrong with the product. We just need to persuade people
to buy it.
4 Maybe we should give discounts on larger quantities.
5 We need to get quotes from other transport firms.
6 The sales manager is appearing on one of those TV interview programmes.
7 I think it’s time we did some more training for the telesales personnel.

8 All the kids are watching that new football soap. Do you think we could
tender for the rights to sell the T-shirts?
‘WIIFM’ – What’s in It for Me?
One of the things which motivate people most is self-interest, which is very
well expressed by the acronym ‘WIIFM’ – What’s in It for Me? Successful
advertisers know this when they promote the benefits to the consumer, rather
than the features of the product.
Task 2.6 Express the following features about a product as benefits, like this:
Feature Benefit
E. g. This ballpoint pen has a retractable point so you
won’t get ink on your clothes.
These shoes are very tough and durable.
This toothpaste contains fluoride.
This watch is very expensive.
This food is pre-cooked.
This chocolate bar contains nuts and raisins.
These trousers do not crease.
This computer is very powerful.
You won’t get ink on your
clothes.
Fig. 1. The Four P’s of the marketing mix
27

Task 2.7 Look at the chart above (fig. 1) and find the place of advertising
in the marketing mix.
The marketing mix is a business tool used in marketing, associated with the
four P’s: price, product, promotion, and place. In 2012, a new four P’s theory
was proposed with people, processes, programs, and performance.
Task 2.8 Match the element of the marketing mix and its purpose.
Marketing Mix
Element
Product a company should have the right product for each of its target
markets.
Place a company should distribute its products or services through
the right channels and make them available in the right outlets
Price a company should price its products or services correctly in
relation to each other and to competitors’ products or services
Promotion a company should advertise and promote its products and
services in an effective way.
Purpose
Task 2.9 Write the appropriate P next to each example.
1. A phone company decides to use the same name for all of its services –
land lines, mobiles and high-speed internet access.
2. An electronics retailer makes all its products available in its stores or
online.
3. A chemical company pays a specialized firm to talk to journalists about
what it is doing to protect the environment.
4. A food-processing company increases the number of its products
available as individual portions in response to a rise in the number of people
living alone.
5. A car manufacturer arranges with suppliers to deliver parts just before
they are needed in production.
6. A clothes retailer allows customers to bring back items for a refund for
up to two weeks after purchase.
7. A company reduces the time that customers can pay from 60 to 30 days.
The Four Cs of the Marketing Mix
In the 1990s, the concept of four C’s was introduced as a more customer-
driven replacement of four P’s. There are two theories based on four Cs.
Lauterborn’s four Cs
consumer/ customer solution, customer
cost, communication, convenience
Shimizu’s four Cs
commodity, cost, communication,
channel
28

Task 2.10 Write the appropriate C next to each example.
1. I like the way the call centre staff were so helpful – they politely answered
all my questions.
2. My bank has a good branch network and there’s one very near where I
work. It’s good not to have to travel across town to get to one.
3. I wanted something that would allow me to check my e-mail and make
phone calls.
4. The airline’s fares are so low that I make trips that I would never have
made before.
Task 2.11 Read the text and in pairs write the possible segments for the
book market.
MARKET SEGMENTATION
A market segment is a group of customers who share similar characteristics,
such as age, income, etc., and have similar needs in relation to a particular
product or service.
When marketers segment a market, they divide customers into segments
so that products or services can be designed for and sold to a particular group
in a particular way. For example, a computer manufacturer might divide its
customers into these segments:
1. home users, who buy computers to surf the internet, play video games,
watch DVDs, etc.
2. small businesses, for email, office applications, such as word processors,
spreadsheets, etc.
3. big companies who buy high numbers of computers for use in large
networks.
The computer maker will use different market segmentation for each
segment. For example, it may use newspaper advertisements to target the first
two segments and employ a special sales force to sell products to the third group.
In consumer marketing, companies might use the following system as a
basis for their segmentation:
A Professionals, for example top business executives, senior civil servants
B Other people with responsible jobs such as middle managers, teachers
C1 All others doing non-manual jobs: technicians, nurses, etc.
C2 Skilled manual workers
D Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
E Those on the lowest income levels, such as pensioners with no other
income
29

Task 2.12 Match the industry to a possible form of market segmentation.
Industry Market Segmentation
1 Airlines A. first-time buyers, professionals who work from
home, families
2 Clothing B. business travellers, leisure travellers
3 New houses C. owners of restaurants, large houses, small flats
4 Kitchen equipment D. children, teenagers, young adults, older adults
Task 2.13 Read the text below and in pairs write the possible psychographic
segments for the book market.
Lifestyle and psychographic segmentation
This type of system divides people into groups such as:
Thinkers – who are motivated by ideals about what is morally right or
wrong. Thinkers are typically mature people who value social order, knowledge
and responsibility.
Achievers – who are motivated by a desire for achievement. Achievers
are typically people who have a good career and a family, both of which they
value very highly.
Strivers – who are motivated by success and money. Strivers are typically
people who are socially active and put a high value on wealth and material
possessions.
Makers – who are motivated by a desire to make or build things. Makers
are typically people with practical skills who value their ability to obtain or
provide all the things they need without any help from other people.
Reading
Task 2.14 Read the text below and answer the following questions.
1. How do you understand the term “top-of-the-mind awareness”?
2. What is promotion mix?
3. What is advertising?
4. What are the functions of advertising?
5. What methods of advertising can you name?
6. What media are usually used in advertising?
7. What is the most advantageous medium?
8. What does the choice of media depend upon?
