You are the Browns, a family without children. The idea of paying
for a Zoo keeper seems promising for you. Choose an animal.
CARD 5
You are the Principal of a Public School. You have 600 pupils aged
between 8 and 14. You appreciate the idea of the Zoo keeper and you are sure that it will not only be fun for your pupils, but it will help to develop love for animals, and responsibility in the children. You had a meeting in the school to discuss the problem with parents, and the pupils’ parents decided to let you adopt several animals. Choose 3 to 5 animals for adoption.
CARD 6
You are a boy or a girl who wants to adopt an animal, but has no
money. Promise to save your pocket money to adopt… Ask the keeper not to give… to anybody else.

ROLE PLAY 18. DETECTIVE GAMES
Detective Game 1
(Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous).
Перед ролевой игрой учитель должен быть уверен, что учащиеся знают лексику, связанную с аэропортом: зал ожидания, эскалатор, лестница, касса, справочное бюро, книжный киоск, ресторан, бар, буфет, кафетерий (the booking-office, the information desk, the waiting hall, the bar, the restaurant, the refreshment room, the cafeteria, the stairway, the news-stall, the post office, escalator, etc).
The detective: “I want you to write the following information:”
1. Where were you between 4 and 4.15?
2. Who saw you there?
3. Why were you there?
Role Play 18. Detective Games
83
4. What had you done before you came there?
5. What were you doing?
6. How long had you been doing it?
7. Who did you see next to you or not far from you?
8. What were they doing?
9. Did you see anything strange or suspicious?
Detective Game 2
CARD 1
You are a detective. Last night you were called to “The Oak Tree”
restaurant at midnight when a murder was discovered there. The victim was a waiter from the restaurant. There were 3 suspects and 2 witnesses.
You are to investigate the case and nd the criminal. It is better
to question the witnesses rst, privately, one by one. A yellow
lighter and a men’s black comb were found near the dead body. It is better if you ask each suspect the same question in turn. You should be interested in many questions such as the time the
witnesses and the suspects came, where they were sitting, with
whom, what they ate, who served them and so on. The questions about the comb and the lighter should be the last.
You might ask the suspects to show you their combs and lighters
84
at the end of your examination. The person who doesn’t know where his things are or gives wrong information is the murderer.
Begin your investigation with the witnesses.
WITNESSES
1. You saw all the suspects drinking beer or wine and nothing
strange.
2. You were not sitting very close by, but heard one of the suspects
talking with the killed waiter in an unfriendly way.
3. When the waiter came to you it seemed he was upset and
sad…
SUSPECTS
1. You drank wine. You don’t smoke at all.
2. You drank beer, smoked, and told anecdotes to your friends.
3. You had a good time, danced, drank wine, and you liked the at-
mosphere but not the service. You won’t come to this restaurant anymore.
While answering the detective’s questions you are a bit nervous
and want to smoke, but can’t nd your lighter in your pockets, you want to comb your hair, but can’t nd your comb.
THE DETECTIVE EXAMPLE OF YOUR QUESTIONS
Do you often come to this restaurant and why? When did you come last time? Who did you come with? What did you order to eat? What did you do for pleasure? Was the waiter’s service good? What time did you leave the restaurant? Where did you go and with whom? Do you smoke? What cigarettes? Will you show me your lighter and comb?
Role Play 18. Detective Games
SUSPECT 1
85
You are a regular customer in the restaurant. You came at 7 p.m.
with your friend.
You ordered wine, a salad, pork chops, fruit. You danced and
played darts. You liked the service there. You left the restaurant at
11.30 and went home alone. You never smoke.
Detective game 3. “A Car Accident”
(5 or 6 people: Sergeant Jones, Inspector Brown, 2 or 3 witnesses,
the Parkers)
One rainy day a young girl was knocked down by a car. She was badly hurt, but the driver disappeared without stopping to help her. 2 or 3 women were standing at the bus stop and saw the accident.
Sergeant Jones is questioning them to find out some facts.
The Sergeant asks what the women saw. One of them guessed the make of the car but is not sure about the color. Another (the other) one thinks the driver was a woman and the first part of the car’s registrations plate was E4. The Sergeant gives the information to the Inspector. The latter gets the information about all the cars in the surroundings and finds the owners of a suspected car.
The next scene is in the house of the Parkers. The couple offered him a cup of tea or coffee.
THE INSPECTOR:
Have you heard anything about the accident? (The husband has,
the wife hasn’t.)
How did you spend the day? (The husband was at work, the wife
was at home doing the housekeeping.)
When and how did you learn about the accident? (The husband
was told by a neighbour, the wife heard from her husband.)
(Suddenly the inspector noticed a pair of shoes near the replace.
He touched them — they are wet.) Whose shoes are they? (The wife — “mine”.) But you didn’t go out. Why are they wet? (Mrs. Parker recollects
that she went to the shop to buy some milk.) When did you go? (At 1 p.m.) (But it started raining only after 2 p.m.) Where is your car? (Here
the wife confesses that it was she who had knocked down the girl
and hadn’t stopped as she was very frightened.)
86
The Inspector asks her to come to the Police Station the next day.
1. The Sergeant and the witnesses.
2. The Sergeant and the Inspector.
3. The Inspector and the Parkers.
4. The Parkers are discussing the accident.
ROLE PLAY 19. “SILVER WEDDING PARTY”
CARD 1
You are… Congratulate them on this event… Recollect something
from their early years…Pay a compliment to their family life or their children…On leaving don’t forget to thank the people for the wonderful party.
CARD 2
You are a reporter and want to interview the couple for your news-
paper column “News in brief ”.
Role Play 20. “On Board the Plane”
87
После изучения тем “Travelling”, “Places of Interest in London”, “My Native Town” иногда вместо монологического высказывания о поездках, вместо описания Лондона и своего города можно провести ролевую игру.
ROLE PLAY 20. “ON BOARD THE PLANE”
1. THE CAPTAIN. ROLE CARD
Introduce yourself and greet the passengers (Good morning, ladies
and gentlemen. This is your captain speaking. Welcome on board this British Airline ight to London)
Give some information about the ight (As soon as I have got
permission, we’ll take o. Don’t forget to fasten the seat-belts. Our ight time is…, so we’ll be in… in time for lunch. The crew will be serving some drinks and refreshments during the ight. If you need any help, press the button and the cabin crew will help you. We hope you’ll enjoy your ight!
2. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT. TIPS
Your duty is to give the passengers any assistance they need, an-
swer all their questions, help the people who suer from airsickness, serve refreshments, etc.
CARD 1
1. You live in London and are on your way back from… You went
there to…
88
Start speaking with the person beside you (how good or bad
the weather is for ying, like or dislike of ying). When you are asked about London give advice on what to see there, by all means.
You have never been to… where your neighbour lives, but think
that…
2. You are ying to London on business. You live in… and your business is…
You would like to see some places of interest in London. When at
school you got some information about this. Ask the person next to you about it. Don’t let him speak much, interrupting him with your questions.
CARD 2
1. It’s the rst ight of your life and you are in for a bumpy ight. Share your worries with the person next to you. Ask him / her about their experience of travelling by air.
2. Travelling by air is your favourite way of travelling. You have own to many places such as… Discuss the advantage of it. Say why you enjoy it. Try to comfort the other person.
1. What does the captain usually do before the flight? (Greets the
passengers, gives information about the flight, wishes the passengers to enjoy the flight, asks them to fasten the seat-belts, etc.)
2. What information could he give during the flight? (The weath-
er conditions, the country they are passing over, in how many minutes they will land, etc).
3. What could he say before landing? (Ask the passengers to fasten
the seat-belts, to remain seated until the plane has come to a
Role Play 21. “To the Barrier!”
89
complete standstill, to be sure they haven’t left any of their belongings behind them. say “Goodbye!, thank them for flying with (British) Airways, invite them to do it in future.)
4. What are the duties of the steward orstewardess (flight attendant or air hostess)? (To serve refreshments, soft drinks and other snacks, newspapers and magazines, ask the passengers from time to time if they are OK, help anyone who feels airsick, etc.)
5. What could passengers ask? (Please, bring some mineral water, what time is it now in London, ask for a magazine to read, her/ his name, where they live, anything they might want to know about your country, if the flight attendant has ever visited your own country, etс).
6. Some unexpected situations (you spilt something on your clothes, you feel airsick, etc.).
ROLE PLAY 21. “TO THE BARRIER!”
Version 1
Version 2
Advantages and disadvantages of advertisements and commercials”.
90
CARD 1
You are a representative of an advertisement agency. You are sure
of the necessity of advertising new products in the press and on TV: food, medicine, places for holiday, service and other things of everyday life. It gives people useful information (give some examples) What is more, advertising makes it possible for many TV programs to exist.
You can’t be responsible for the drawbacks and shortcomings of
TV companies or broadcasters using the medium in the wrong way.
CARD 2
You are a reporter for a newspaper and are working now with lots
of readers’ letters in which they complain about the abundance of ads and commercials and express their annoyance, irritation and criticism. They especially hate advertising breaks made in the course of showing lms or live broadcasting. In many cases people are not satised with the quality and the reasons for commercials.
1. to interrupt, to cut short, to break off;
2. to annoy, to irritate, to criticize; don’t respect the viewers, get
on their nerves;
3. dishonest, not sincere, deceive;
4. advantages, disadvantages of advertising;
5. washing powder, detergent, chewing gum, cosmetics, shampoo;
6. to do without ads;
7. at a low price, at a reduced price;
8. goods which have not found a market;
