Role Play 1. Interviewing People
51
Are there animals on the planet? Do you have pets at home? Which ones? etc.
Why did you land on our planet? Who sent you? What do people on your planet know about the Earth? Do you have schools? Who are your teachers: people or computers
and machines?
How do they get information about our planet? Do you have Universities? Do you have television (TV)?
1. You are one of the best stuntmen (каскадер) in Russia. People
call you “fireball”, because you ride a motorbike through burn-

ing rings. You are often invited by film studios to perform dangerous tricks.
2. You are a young promising painter… Your name is… You paint… because… It’s the first time your pictures have been in … at the International Exhibition of Teenaged Painters.
3. You are Fernando Ortega (from Barcelona). You had been dreaming of becoming a matador for … years before you became one in … You began to ride a horse when you were 7.
4. You are … and a great lover and defender of animals. You organized the first hotel for animals in Minsk.
5. You rode a bicycle from Moscow to Vladivostok. Be ready to answer a lot of reporters’ questions concerning pleasure, danger, problems, and people you met during the trip.
6. You hitch-hiked from London to Aberdeen. You wanted to see the Highlands which were sung and glorified by your favourite poet Robert Burns.
7. You have moved from a big isolated centre to the taiga now that you are retired and want to find some peace and consolation by living close to nature. There is a small railway station not far from your place.
8. You are Carolyn Wells, a mountain climber. You were born in London. People call you “Mrs. Everest” You got the nickname because you were the first woman on the mountain. In your childhood you enjoyed active sports games. At the age of 6 you climbed high trees in your parents’ garden.
9. You are Maria Rieder, a pilot. You were born in Munich (Germany). Your nickname is “The Eagle”, because you fly high and fast. Even in your childhood you dreamed of becoming a pilot. When you were 9, you flew a glider.
10. You drove your car from your native city to Minsk. What interesting places did you pass? What new and interesting things did you see?
Role Play 2. “Let’s Question a Spy”
53
Let’s Question a Spy”.
ROLE PLAY 2. “LET’S QUESTION A SPY”
At the Reception”.
Role Play 3. Hotel Owner, Role Play 4. At the Post Office).
ROLE PLAY 3. HOTEL OWNER OR RECEPTIONIST AND GUEST
1. Discussing the town (the guest would like to know about
restaurants, museums, theatres, swimming pools, etc.).
2. Complaints about the service in the hotel: no hot water, noise late at night, no toilet paper, no mineral water in the fridge, you can’t open the window for fresh air, the telephone is out of order, the TV remote control doesn’t work, etc.
54
3. The guest would like to change rooms.
4. The guest wants to book tickets for a theatre or for a flight,
etc.
5. A discussion between 2 guests who are exchanging their opinions about the service in the hotel
1. I can’t agree with you.
2. As far as I’m concerned...
3. I do like it.
4. On the contrary, I…
5. On the one hand...
6. On the other hand…
Receptionist:
1. I’m sorry to hear it.
2. This is the first time someone has complained about this.
3. I’ll try to help you.
4. Can I offer you a free lunch today?
5. Oh! I’m terribly sorry about it, Sir /Madam.
6. I’ll do my best to help you!
ROLE PLAY 4. AT THE POST OFFICE
1) to send, to post a letter, a parcel, postcards, telegrams, registered letters (by airmail), e-mails, some presents by registered post, money by post, (by telegraph);
2) to buy envelopes, stamps, postcards, telegram forms, newspapers, magazines, posters, an international phone card;
3) to get photocopies made, exchange currency, to get an intercity phone, to make a money transfer;
4) to pay gas, water, electricity, rent or telephone bills;
5) a cashier, to pay in cash or by electronic card, a counter, scales, to weigh.
Role Play 4. At the Post Oce
55
“Stamps”, “Envelopes”, “Papers”, “Registered Letters. Parcels”.
1. Do you sell… ?
2. Could I… ?
3. Is it possible to… ?
4. How much does it cost… ?
5. How long does it take to… ?
6. I need to… ?
Next, please!”
Intermediate Level
CUSTOMER 1

ROLE PLAY 5. INTERVIEW IN THE STYLE OF THE TV SHOW “100 QUESTIONS TO GROWNUPS”
Role Play 6. Interviewing Dierent People
57
What would you say if…”, “What would
you do if…”, “Imagine…”.
ROLE PLAY 6. INTERVIEWING DIFFERENT PEOPLE
Grammar: The Present Perfect, Past simple, Present Continuous, Present Perfect Continuous
Vocabulary: genres of, awards, international contests, (exhibitions, fairs, projects), make money, spend money, win awards, influence, disappointment, make mistakes, who taught you to…?
Who encouraged you to… popularity, publicity, celebrity, etc.
1. Do you think their lives are easy (difficult, interesting, hard)?
2. What do you like in their lives?
3. What do you dislike?
4. Would you like to be a very famous celebrity? Why?
5. What would you like or dislike about being a very famous ce-
lebrity?

ROLE PLAY 7. PETER BROWN SAW UFO
You were fishing during the night, the weather was fine, there weren’t any clouds. At first you saw a bright light. Then you could make out that it was a round thing, which landed not far away from you. You saw 2 (3 or 4) creatures (describe their appearance) approaching you. They spoke like machines.
1. On seeing it I…
2. They didn’t look like humans.
3. They asked me about…
4. They wanted to have some…
5. They invited me into their cabin. I was… But…
6. The cabin looked… or didn’t look…
7. They showed me…
8. They treated me like…
9. They gave me… to taste.
10. They told me about…
11. They showed me how they (can dance, sing, draw, etc.).
12. I understood them…
13. The police were interested in this event and…
14. The military services were also interested in the episode.
CARD FOR NICK
When your friends went o to see what it was you felt frightened
and sat in the car to wait. A few minutes later you noticed a strange hairy creature approaching the car. You were so frightened that you screamed and pressed the horn to signal for help. The creature stepped back, and began to say something in a strange manner and voice which sounded like a machine. You pressed the
Role Play 8. The Teenagers Who Swam Across the English Channel
horn again and the creature began moving back. At that moment your friends arrived back and reassured you, saying they had met some aliens and tried to talk with them. You believed them and decided to tell the whole class about it.
TIPS FOR THE OTHERS IN THE GROUP
1. You are the alien who tried to talk with Nick. Think about how you will do it.
2. You are the person who saw a strange ying object land not far away. You are the only person who saw it.
3. You should pretend not to believe.
4. You try to encourage your friends to go and have a look at them.
5. You will question Nick about everything he saw and felt.
6. When Nick decides to tell everybody at school about it, you will explain to him that it was a practical joke played on him by some of his school friends.
ROLE PLAY 8. THE TEENAGERS WHO SWAM ACROSS THE ENG LISH CHANNEL
59
CARD FOR THE BOY
You are 15, and a very good swimmer. You learnt to swim when
you were 6 years old. Since that time swimming has been your favourite occupation.
Once you saw an article in the paper about a man who had swum
across the Channel.
He was not the only one to do it. You were inspired by this and
decided to do the same.
Your dad encouraged you, but mum didn’t. It took you 14 hours
to cross the Channel. Two boats with divers accompanied you with drinking water and sandwiches, and a rst aid kit just in case.
60
Think about some facts: who met you on the French coast, what
you felt, plans for the future, etc.
CARD FOR THE GIRL
You are crazy about swimming. Your mum is a swimming instruc-
tor and she taught you to swim when you were 3 years old. She took you with her to work at the swimming pool and you enjoyed the time you spent there with children who were older than you. They all paid a lot of attention to you and did their best to teach you as well. When you watched a TV programme about the boy who had swum across the Channel, you were eager to do the same. Your parents encouraged you. Mum was in the boat accompanying you together with 2 divers. Dad met you on the French coast You were all happy.
It took you 15 hours. The Sun was unpleasantly bright. You were
afraid of storms, but luckily the forecast was right. The weather was ne.
ROLE PLAY 9. A ROBINSON CRUSOE
Jack Hawkins, who spent his one-month holiday on an uninhabited
island.
Some tips for Jack.
Being tired and fed up with city life, you decided to experience the life of Robinson Crusoe, who lived alone for 28 years on an uninhabited island. With the help of a map you found one which could be reached by a motor boat. You took the same instruments Crusoe had, and some packages of food.
The things Crusoe didn’t have were a machine for changing salt water into drinking water, a fishing rod, and a radio-transmitter (walkie–talkie) powered by batteries. Be ready to answer a lot of
