Role Play 26. Former Classmates Reunion (Get Together)
101
How’s life treating you?
Terribly! Fantastic! Fine!
Talking about your life:
I’ve got married…
Here’s a photo of my…
I’ve started to work for…
I’ve been working there for…
I’ve been on business to…
I’ve started a new hobby…
Questions to ask:
Have you done much travelling?
Have you heard about…?
Do you live in the centre of…?
Have you kept in touch with…?
Oh! Who’s that?
Do you remember how we…?
Why do you think former school students come to the school every
year?
What is so interesting for them to learn? What do they feel at the
party?
What do your parents tell you about such meetings?
How has your life changed over the last 2 years at school?
How do you think it will change over the next 25 years?
How do you think you can let every classmate know about the meeting?
(City TV news, Central TV programme “Wait for me,” the Internet,
the site “odnoclassniki”, chain e-mail messages, etc.)
Work out the text for an advertisement to let everybody know about
a school party. For example:
“If you were a student at school #5 during 2007-2009, you are invited to meet your former classmates on May 25 at 7 p.m. in our old
classroom. Please, BRING SOME PHOTOS or SOUVENIRS from that
time. REMEMBER — if you’re not there we won't be complete!”

Former students’ reunion”.
Version 1
ROLE PLAY 27. AT THE ZOO
GROUP ACTIVITIES IN DISCUSSION STYLE

You mustn’t…
You shouldn’t…
You shouldn’t have done it.
You ought to be more attentive.
If I were you, I wouldn’t do it.
If I were you I wouldn’t have done it. It’s only your fault.
What would you
do if you were in my place?/ me? / in my shoes? / Peter?
CARD 1
You are a visitor to a small Zoo. The elephant has eaten your glove.
You complain to the Zoo keeper about it. There is not any notice
warning that the animal might steal visitors’ things.
CARD 2
You are the Zoo keeper. You are fed up with stupid visitors who
feed the animals and lose their things.
CARD 3
You are a visitor to the Zoo who hears another visitor complaining
to the Zoo keeper.
You may take sides with either of them and give your opinion or
examples of other cases you have heard about.

104
Other topics using the same method:
1. The owner of an expensive restaurant and a tourist wearing
shorts and sandals.
2. The church warden and a tourist with a dog.
3. The bus driver and a passenger with 2 dogs.
4. The museum attendant and a tourist taking photos.
ROLE PLAY 28. AT THE SHOP
GROUP ACTIVITIES IN DISCUSSION STYLE
Version 1
CARD 1
You are a Supermarket Security Guard. The security system shows
that the woman who is about to leave the store hasn’t paid for
her purchase. You stop her and start talking with her. You are sure
that she is a (regular) shoplifter stealing goods from your shop,
and should be punished. These things are happening every day.
You don’t believe that she has done it accidentally. You are sure
she is guilty, and is giving the same standard explanation which
all shoplifters give.
CARD 2
You are the woman who was stopped by security at the exit of
the supermarket. When you were buying cheese you saw a former
classmate you hadn’t seen for 15 years.
You were completely carried away with the pleasure of seeing
each other, talked for a while about everything, and then parted;
she went to another department, and you went home thinking
about the surprise meeting, completely distracted by the inuence
of your talk. Suddenly you see a man in uniform in the doorway.

Role play 28. At the Shop (group activities in discussion style)
105
Try to make the man believe you didn’t mean to leave the shop
without paying for the goods in your basket.
While the couple are acting in front of the group, the rest of the
pupils are following the conversation and then discuss what other
excuses could be given in this situation.
Version 2
CARD 3
You see some people standing round your former classmate. You
ask the onlookers what has happened and then start talking with
the security guard, trying to explain everything to him.
CARD 4
You are… You want to buy… At the entrance to the supermarket
you see a group of people…
You ask one of the onlookers what is going on. After hearing an
explanation of the problem you look at the woman and recognize… Begin talking with the security guard, and try explaining to
him why the woman cannot be a shoplifter.

1. A bus ticket inspector and a stowaway (безбилетный пассажир,
2. A traffic warden and a driver who parked his car in a No Parking zone.
3. A museum attendant and a tourist taking photos.
4. A teacher and a student who hasn’t done his homework.
ROLE PLAY 29. “WE ARE PSYCHOLOGISTS”
Version 1
CARD A
I am a fteen-year-old girl and I love Jack, who is 18, very much
and he says he loves me too, and we get on really well together.
The trouble is that my parents don’t like him at all. Dad said: “I
don’t like his barber and his tailor” Mum thinks I’m too young to
have a steady boyfriend and that since I met Jack I’ve been neglecting my schoolwork which is not true. She told me to nish
with him, which is really unfair. I feel so desperately unhappy and
don’t know what to do.
Words:
1. A barber is a person who cuts men’s hair (мужской парик-
махер).
2. A tailor is a person who makes clothes (портной).
3. Desperately — very much (отчаянно).

Role play 29. “We Are Psychologists”
107
CARD B
Dear girl,
No wonder you don’t understand your parents anymore. What ef-
forts have you made to understand them? Clearly, they love you
and don’t want you to throw your life away at the age of 15. Surely,
they realize that an eighteen-year-old boy is going to want a sexual relationship with you, which is not good for you at your age.
It’s very dicult to believe that your studies haven’t been aected.
CARD B
Dear girl,
For me it’s too hard to expect you to break o with Jack, but
perhaps you should agree to see him less often. If he really loves
you, as you believe, then he will be prepared to wait for you.
I think the real problem you should concentrate on is improving
your relationship with your parents, so try to see what things look
like from their point of view.
CARD B
Dear girl,
I don’t think it will help either you or your parents if you just sit
back, feeling utterly miserable, and wait for this problem to blow
away. It’s not going to go away unless YOU do something about
it. You have to realize that this is YOUR life and that you have to
make some fairly dicult decisions for yourself.
Neither Jack nor your parents will solve the problem for you.

108
CARD B
Dear girl,
Judging from your letter I think you are mature enough to make
this decision for yourself. I am sure that arguing with your parents
won’t help. You won’t change people’s minds by trying to prove
to them that they are wrong. You have to show your parents that
you are NOT neglecting your school work, and that you are still
doing as well as ever. If it doesn’t help, you will have to choose to
do either what you want for yourself or what will make your parents happy. If you continue going out with Jack, and your parents
don’t like this, then this is really THEIR problem.
CARD B
Dear girl,
I receive lots of letters like yours from girls whose parents are not
pleased with their daughters’ boyfriends. I do understand that you
are very unhappy because your parents want you to break up your
relationship with Jack, but you love him and don’t want to leave
him. I am sure, however, that your parents want the best for you.
You certainly don’t want to break your relationship with your parents, but I don’t think you are going to solve the problem unless
you can get into a meaningful discussion with them.
CARD B
Dear girl,
You are in a dicult situation and it’s not so easy to give you good
advice. The only thing I advise you to do is to avoid the typical
“ping-pong” argument when you state your point of view and they
state theirs and neither side moves an inch. Be prepared to make
a few concessions. Perhaps if you make a few, they will do too. If
your parents see that you understand them, they might begin to
understand you a bit better. When your dad begins to feel less
anxious about your relationship with Jack, his objections to Jack’s
hairstyle and clothing will become milder.
Version 2

Role play 29. “We Are Psychologists”
109
What do you think I should do?
Dear friends,
I am a sixteen-year-old boy and I hate my mother. It may sound
terrible to you, but I really hate her. I used to think I would get over
it, but now I know I never will.
Sometimes I think I will go out of my mind if she doesn’t stop picking on me. I can never do anything that suits her. She doesn’t like my
clothes, my hair, my friends, or anything. My friends are not bad at all,
but my mother says they look terrible. You are the same age as me.
Please help me, before I run away from home. I can’t get to sleep at
night because my mother is so hateful.
At night-time I talk with her, trying to say how awful she is and prove
that she is not right when makes me put all my pocket money in the
bank. Other boys can buy records or do whatever they want with their
pocket money.
Don’t tell me to talk to my father, as he is always on her side. And
don’t tell me she “loves” me and is only doing things for my good.
Depressed.
Words:
1. to go out of one’s mind — to become mad —
2. to pick on somebody — to treat smb. unkindly again and
Note:
Reading the answer aloud needs special techniques.
The good reader:
1. has read the text carefully before he/ she starts reading out
aloud;
2. doesn’t read too fast;
3. makes frequent pauses;

110
4. gives the audience the impression that he/ she is interested in
what he/she is reading;
5. looks at his/her listeners from time to time.
Version 3
•I think, I can help you.
•I am going to deal with your problem.
•I’ll try to help you.
•This is what I’d like to tell you.
•I’d like to explain to you that…
•It seems to me you are not right here.
•I am afraid you don’t understand the point that…
•You shouldn’t be worried about it.
Problems
CARD 1
I don’t have very many fashionable clothes so people laugh at me.
I spend money I get on computer stu which I am much more
interested in. I hate buying clothes. How can I stop people making
fun of me?
