Role Play 13. The Idea of Summerhill Academy in Aberdeen, Scotland
ing in Belarus” и “The Educational System of Great Britain”.
ROLE PLAY 13. THE IDEA OF SUMMERHILL ACADEMY
IN ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND
71
Summerhill is a school created by the Neils and when they started it they had one main idea: to make the school fit the child instead of making the child fit the school.
Before A. S. Neil opened Summerhill, he had been teaching in ordinary schools for many years. He felt that something was wrong, because a child should learn and should be according to the idea of grown-ups’ conception but not his own one.
It seemed to him such schools are good only for uncreative people.
Eventually, he decided to change this situation and created a new type of school.
So they set up a school in which they would allow children freedom to be themselves according to their innate abilities and interests.
Учащиеся (студенты) должны знать слова: adult conception, innate abilities, to fit a child.
72
II. Discussion-Prediction
Teacher’s questions:
1. Do you think school children should have the right to choose subjects and lessons?
2. Should children have classes according to their age or according to their interests?
3. Is there a timetable for classes?
4. Does Summerhill have special teaching methods?
5. Is it easy to influence the children at Summerhill?
6. Are the children happy there?
7. In the teachers’ room there is a slogan on the wall: “School is for Students, not Students are for School.” What is your understanding of this?
III. What is Summerhill like?
Classes are optional; children can attend them or stay away from them if they wish.
There is a timetable, but only for the teachers.
The children have classes usually according to their age, but sometimes according to their interest.
Summerhill can be called the happiest school in the world.
They have no truants, and seldom have a case of homesickness (it is a boarding school).
Role Play 13. The Idea of Summerhill Academy in Aberdeen, Scotland
73
Of course, they sometimes have fights and quarrels, but there is no
cruelty (children will be children).
The children are not oppressed or downtrodden as we are sure that
hate gives birth to hate, and love breeds love.
You are not on the children’s side if you shout at them, punish them,
or discourage them.
Summerhill is a school in which the children know that they will
find understanding and support.
Children should have their own life and education, not according to
the ideas of educators who think they know what is better.
All the interference and guidance on the part of grown-ups produces a generation of robots. In Summerhill Academy everyone has equal rights — teachers and pupils. Free children are not easily influenced, but the absence of fear is the finest thing that can happen to the child.
A. S. Neil thinks that the aim of life is to find happiness, which means to find interests. Education should be a preparation for life, yet most of the work that young people do at school is simply a waste of time and energy.
IV. Questions for Discussion
1. Which points in your predictions were right?
2. What surprised you most of all?
3. In what ways does the child usually have to fit into a school? (to study all the subjects, to attend all the classes, to do home-
work every day, not to be late for classes, to observe all the rules and regulations), etc.
4. To what extent do you think the children fit into Summerhill?
5. To what extent do you think Summerhill fits the children?
6. What do you think the children enjoy at Summerhill?
7. Which of Neil’s ideas do you agree with? Why?
8. Which of them do you disagree with? Why?
9. What is your understanding of Neil’s idea of the aim of life and
the work students do in ordinary schools?
Do you agree with him?
V. Work in Groups
Questions for discussion:
1. How does Summerhill help pupils develop their character?
2. How does it give them knowledge needed for their future careers?
3. How does the Academy teach them to get on with each other?
4. How does Summerhill make school a pleasant place to study?
5. How does the Academy develop their abilities, talents, interests?
VI. Work in groups of 4, 5 or 6.
VII. Doing a Survey
School Must:
1. Teach children to read and write.
2. Give them knowledge about the world around them, nature, the
environment.
3. Teach them about right and wrong.
4. Show them how to get on with peers, parents and grown-ups.
5. Help them choose the right profession for themselves.
6. Develop their abilities, talents, and interests.
7. Keep them busy with useful personal and social activities.
8. Help them pass the final exams and be admitted to colleges and
universities.
9. Teach them things (knowledge, skills) they will need in future
family life.
Role Play 14. Which School Is Best?
75
10. Teach pupils how to behave in extreme situations.
11. Be a pleasant place to study at and be in.
ROLE PLAY 14. WHICH SCHOOL IS BEST?
Teacher: 3 or 4 students are headmasters of a school they are planning to open.
The other students are parents, who want to choose the right school for their kids. “The schools” are situated in the 4 corners of the room. “The Parents” visit the “headmasters” in turn and try to find the school which is most suitable for their children. They ask the “headmasters” about the location, surroundings, curricula, optional subjects, out-ofclass activities, sports and art clubs, transport (if the school has a school bus to fetch pupils who live in other districts of the city), and other questions.
After visiting all the “schools”, the parents declare which one is most suitable for their son or daughter, giving their reasons.
ROLE PLAY 15. AT THE INTERNET CAFÉ
Language Target
1. Specific preference (I’d like to… I’d prefer to… You had better…
I would rather…).
76
2. Indirect questions (I’d like to know how… I am not sure how I… Would you explain how to…).
3. Making enquiries (Is it possible… How can I… Is it right to…).
4. Computers and Internet vocabulary (click, scan, select menu, search, transfer, site, mouse potato, open the expander, buttons, transfer photos, print out, type up, flash, digital camera, etc.).
Lead-in talk
1. Are there any Internet Cafés in our city? (Where are they situated?)
2. What services do they provide?
3. Who usually visits the cafés? (On what occasions?)
4. Have you ever used the services of an Internet Café? (When? What for?)
5. If you have been a customer of an Internet Café, when did you last visit? Why? What for?
6. Do you think that Internet Cafés will become more popular in the future or that people won’t need them? Give your reason for the answer.

coca-cola, fruit salads. You have to use the price list. You should
oer all the customers some refreshments (drinks and snacks), tea,
coee and so on.
CUSTOMER 1
You have come to this town for a holiday. You are staying at your
former classmate’s place. You want to write a letter to your parents and tell them how you
are spending the time. The computer is like Greek for you. You ask the assistant to help
you. As you are hungry ask for a snack from the menu. Type up a
letter to your parents.
CUSTOMER 2
You have to send some documents to a joint Belarus — German
company to apply for a vacancy you read about in the newspa-
per. You have a computer at home, but it has broken down. You
are not a very experienced user, so sometimes you will need the
assistant’s help. You need to make copies of your passport,
university certificate, the recommendation letter and applica-
tion form. You want to have the job very much. You need a re-
ceipt.
78
CUSTOMER 3
You are in the town where you spent your early years. You haven’t
been here for 15 years. You have come to celebrate the 20th jubilee of leaving school. You need the Internet Café to write a letter and send it via e-mail to your parents and tell them information about your former classmates (their families, jobs, appearances, etc.) Your parents know them all as they used to come to your place when you were all at school.
CUSTOMER 4
You are a journalist from a national newspaper published in the
capital. You are on a working visit to the review café as it is new and you have the job of telling the readers of your paper all about it. Your task is to interview customers, and take photos with your digital camera. You want to print them out here and send them together with the interview to the editor of the paper. You need a receipt by all means.
Как говорят англичане: “There is always room for improvement.”
ROLE PLAY 16. AUTHENTIC THINGS IN CLASSES
I have got…
Passive Voice.
Role Play 16. Authentic Things in Classes
79
Например:
1. A doll’s dress. Задание: Теll us as much as you can about the dress.
It belongs to my doll who is called Kate. The dress is pink with
a white collar. It has got short sleeves. It is made of silk. It was bought a few days ago. It is not worn every day as it is used for special occasions.
2. A book. The book was written by… It was published in … by Minsk Publishing House.
It is sold by The Book Shop in … street. It was given to me as
a birthday present on (date).
It has already been read by my family. It can’t be read by my
little sister as she too small to read. The book will be kept in our family library
I used to… I would do…
I (used to) would play with the toy when I was 7. We used to
live in…
1. Is it exciting, amusing or boring?
2. Does it give new information? (Is it informative?)
3. Do you think it is truthful or deceitful?
4. Is the description of the thing convincing?
5. Who is the thing aimed at? (babies, teenagers, adults, women, men)
6. Does it make you want to buy it?
ping”:
ROLE PLAY 17. “SAVE THE ANIMALS”
ROLE CARD
You are having some nancial problems. You don’t want to lose
the animals and have decided to get out of the situation with the help of a clever plan. You know that people love dierent animals and they might adopt them. They can’t take the animals home, but they must feed them at the Zoo, and walk them.
