Role play 29. “We Are Psychologists”
CARD 2
111
Please help me; I am scared of dying! (I am afraid of dying.)
The thing is I seem to delight in making it worse for myself, be-
cause I am crazy about horror lms and thriller books.
Sometimes at night I’m even scared to go to bed in case I don’t
wake up. After reading one of my books, I can’t sleep for hours
imagining all sorts of horrible monsters in my room. I know it
sounds silly, but it really is making my life a misery!
CARD 3
I take piano lessons and I absolutely hate them. My Mum forces me
to go, because she says it’ll be good for me. I don’t see how it can
be, as I don’t even take music at school! Every time I try to mention
it to Mum, it always seems to end up in a row. What can I do?
CARD 4
I am 16 and for the last few weeks I’ve been suering from terrible
insomnia (бессонница). I just can’t get to sleep at night!
I’ve tried staying up really late so that I tire myself out, but as soon
as I get to bed I am wide awake again! I’ve tried doing all sorts of
exercises, but they don't work either.
CARD 5
My friend won’t stop copying me. Whenever I buy something new,
she immediately goes out and buys the same thing. Now she’s
even started laughing like me.
I’ve told her that I really don’t like it, but she gets all upset and
starts to cry.
My parents say I should take it as a compliment, but I can’t. I’ve
begun to dread getting anything new because, even though I try
to keep my new things out of her sight, sooner or later she sees
me in them. What can I do?
CARD 6
My girlfriend keeps asking me why I don’t take her out more, even
though she knows I haven’t got much money. She says most of
her classmates get taken to the pictures or discos, and she feels
really left out.
I think we still manage to have a good time, but she obviously
doesn’t agree.

CARD 7
About 4 years ago I began to have predictions in my dreams: if I
dream about something at night, it comes true within some time.
It’s frightening especially when I dreamed a relative of mine died,
and then all of sudden she did. I still cry at night, I am scared something like this will happen again. Once I told my dad about it, but
he got really angry and threatened to take me to the doctor.
Sometimes I have a feeling that there is something in the room
and I hear voices calling me. I know it sounds like I am crazy, but
I’m not - honestly.
Cards for Psychologists
CARD 1
If your girlfriend cares more about impressing her friends than
having a good time with you, maybe you should ask yourself if
you are with the right girl.
It’s not your fault you haven’t got much money, if it’s that impor-
tant to her, you’d probably be happier with someone else.
If she is as spoilt and selsh as she sounds, you’d better stop see-
ing her.
CARD 2
We can’t tell you what the reasons for your problem are, but we
can tell you that many teenagers like you have similar dreams. You
will probably grow out of it as you get older. Why don’t you go
and see your doctor and ask your mum or dad to go with you. If
the doctor sees any problems, he or she will recommend somebody who can help you.
CARD 3
We think your parents are right; your friend’s behaviour is a com-
pliment. It seems you look very good in the clothes and make-up
you wear and she wants to be the same.
Your friend is probably quite shy and lacks self-condence. That’s
why she copies you so much. I think one way to stop her coping
you is to help her to build up her condence. Go shopping with

her and help her to nd things that really suit her. Gradually she
is going to understand she can look good in her own way.
CARD 4
Don’t even waste your time trying- it’s that simple! It’s stupid to
judge people by the clothes they wear. The thing is, you’d think
from all the advertising we see on TV and magazines that wearing
fashionable, up-to-the-minute clothes is very important. But a lot
of people, just like you, prefer to spend money on other things
and that’s ne!
CARD 5
Insomnia really is an annoying thing; the more you think and
worry about it, the harder it is to get to sleep.
We have a few suggestions for you. Try a hot milky drink just be-
fore bed-time: don’t drink any tea or coee or cocoa as they contain caeine, which keeps you awake. Then, when in bed listen to
relaxing, soft music or read something light.
You should also remember that we don’t all need the same amount
of sleep. Perhaps you need less than you think you do.
CARD 6
Music lessons can be hard work, but before you give up com-
pletely, why not give them one last try? If there’s any kind of music you do like — take pop for example — perhaps you’d enjoy
learning some of that instead. If you talk about it with your teacher, she may agree to teach you how to play music you like.
If you really are sure about giving up the lessons, then you will
have to talk to your mum again. Try to talk to her calmly, tell her
that you really don’t enjoy your music lessons, and that it’s a waste
of time and money. I think she will see your point.
CARD 7
We don’t think you are being silly at all, a lot of people worry about
the same thing, but you certainly aren’t doing anything to make
things easier for yourself!
Why not give up reading the horror books? Why not read some-
thing lighter before going to bed. Don’t watch horror lms either,
and if you do watch them try to remember that they are simply
just lms. Try to think about pleasant things to help to take your

mind o your fears. You could also sleep with a dim night light.
We hope we’ve been able to help you.
Version 4. "We are psychologists" (a group talk)
Dear Helpers,
I feel as if I have no life at all. I study from 9am till 3 pm, then do
my home tasks and sit at home watching TV or playing computer games
in the evenings, and then go to bed. Every weekday is the same.
I feel even lonelier at weekends. Everyone seems to have a friend
except for me.
They play different games together, go for a walk. I have no one for
company. I don’t know how to make friends. Can you help me? I am
so worried. Victor Safronov.
Examples of some advice given by psychologists
1. Lots of people can feel lonely at times, but the best way to get
out of this situation is to take up a hobby…
2. Your class can be a great place for making friends…
3. Try to ask your classmates about their interests, find out their
birthday and say some greetings on their special days…
4. Invite some of your classmates to your place to listen to their
favourite music, or to talk about something.
5. Try not to ignore any trips or excursions with your class be-
cause…
6. You could also boost your confidence (рекламировать свою
уверенность) by having your haircut or your image changed.

ROLE PLAY 30. “WE ARE JOURNALISTS”
Version 1
Version 2
Version 3
Version 4
• Smoke-free zones
• Having a great time!
• Food for thought
• Shoplifting security
• 60 days at sea

116
• Lost
• Build railway not roads
• Use the power of the wind!
• A year-old cat saved!
• Use the Sun’s energy!
• Prime Minister to see U.S. President
• Act on pollution
• Young “mouse potatoes”
• Climbing Mountains in four Continents
• Don’t die of ignorance!
• Being wise after the event
• World problem
• Go to ask Alice
• Runaway children go back to family
• No rules any more!
• No smoke any more!
• Quick thinking prevents crime.
• A miracle escape!
• Looking after the world
• Funny money
• Living history
• Death by tourism
• Kids and dog up for sale
• Camping with a Wolf
• Pilotless Jet-Plane crashes
• Channel champion
• Hijacked jet blown up
• Bank Robbers escape in stolen car
Version 5

Role play 30. “We Are Journalists”
117
1. А 60-year-old pensioner, Mr. Brown, saw a strange animal in
his back garden. He is sure it was a puma…
2. Nowadays, Volkswagen cars are made in South/Latin America,
but they still have a reputation of...
3. Yesterday, some ruins were found in a field belonging to
Mr. Green, a farmer...
Version 6
кафе или в ресторане (symposium, conference, festival, an international meeting of public organizations, business meeting for signing
contracts, etc.).

118
1. Protection of Nature
2. The Forthcoming Olympic Games
3. People’s Rights
4. Teenagers’ Problems
5. Joint Construction of a Sports Centre in a Developing Country
6. Education in the 21st Century
7. Children’s rights
ROLE PLAY 31. “WONDERS OF THE MODERN WORLD”
Pre-discussion Talk
The teacher’s questions:
1. What do people call “wonders”?
2. What classical wonders do we know, dating back to the second
century BC?
(The Pyramids of Egypt, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Colossus
of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria in Pharos, the Temple of Diana,
the Tomb of Mausolus, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.)
There is one more wonder, situated in Northern Ireland, which is
called “The Giant’s Causeway” — great stairs down from the coastline
into the ocean (ступенчатый спуск к океану).

Role play 31. “Wonders of the Modern World”
119
Many centuries have passed. Have they brought new wonders to
mankind?
Version 1
Version 2
Version 3
Version 4
