A. How Much Energy People Use Today
B. Energy Is an Essential Part of Man’s Civilization
C. From the History of Man’s Civilization
D. Fossil Fuels
We know energy to be an essential part of our civilization. A million years ago primitive man needed only 6,000 kJ a day which he got in the form of food and were enough to find other food.

By the 15th century people had learned to use domestic animals, wind

and water. Their energy was put to work for human purposes to produce more food. Using windmills, water-wheels and a little coal medieval man was already consuming 120,000 kJ a day.
The 18th century was marked by the invention of the steam engine. It
was this invention that made 340,000 kJ a day available to industrial man in England.
Today, due to heavy use of coal, oil, and natural gas man consumes
1,000,000 kJ a day, one third in the form of electricity. In the nearest future energy consumption is sure to increase. The reasons are quite evident. Technological man lives four times as long as primitive man and twice as long as man in the 15th century. Nearly half of man’s life today is spent on education, leisure and creative activities. Medieval man spent only quarter of his thirty-five years in these pursuits, and primitive man – only one sixth in his short life of eighteen years.
Most energy we use today is received from burning fossil fuels – coal,
oil and natural gas. These are non-renewable resources and they are not likely to last forever.
In fact, there is no shortage of primary energy. The sun provides ten
thousand times as much energy as we require today. Indirect solar energy comes in many forms ranging from solar radiation through wind and waves to trees and plants. To convert these resources into mechanical work or other usable forms of energy is the problem at which our scientists and engineers are working hard.

Задание 2. В настоящее время существуют две основные теории про- исхождения нефти – органическая (биологическая) и неорганическая (геологическая). Прочитайте текст со словарем и найдите абзац, в котором говорится об органической теории происхождения нефти.
OIL FORMATION
(1) Nowadays two main theories of oil formation, biogenic and
abiogenic, are known to exist.
(2) According to the biogenic theory oil is formed from the remains of
dead plants and animals buried under heavy layers of oceanic sediments.
79
(Land plants tend to form coal). The intense heat and pressure cause the remains of this organic matter to metamorphose, first into a waxy material known as kerogen, and then with more heat into oil and gas. It is this theory that is favoured by most scientists in the world.
(3) The other theory of oil formation is the abiogenic theory which postulates that petroleum was formed from deep carbon deposits. This theory was proposed in the 19th century by a Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, and by a French chemist Marcellin Berthelot, and revived in the 20th century by Russian and Ukrainian geoscientists.
(4) In 1999, the American astronomer Thomas Gold developed this
theory further in his book ‘The Deep Hot Biosphere – The Myth of Fossil Fuels’. Gold writes: “The abiogenic theory holds that hydrocarbons were
a component of the material that formed the Earth through accretion of
solids some 4.5 billion years ago”. According to this theory, the elements of petroleum have been deep in the Earth since the Earth’s formation.
Задание 3. Ответьте на вопросы (1–4), выбрав правильный вариант (a–e). Один вариант ответа лишний.
