and world-wide competitions attract thousands of enthusiasts. It has become easier to enjoy this attractive sport too, as changes in the law regarding
passenger flights have allowed commercial ballooning companies to offer pleasure trips for parties and festivals. Most balloons carry 4 to 8 people, but some have been designed to carry more. One of these is the balloon which set the world record with a flight carrying 61 passengers at 12 metres above the ground. The surprising thing about ballooning is that it is a hobby people follow for relaxation rather than excitement. This fact is amazing considering that you are travelling in a large laundry basket 3,000 feet above the ground that you never know where you will end up landing.
One thing that is so attractive is the simplicity of ballooning.
[2]
The simple mechanism of a hot air balloon has not changed since the French Montgolfier brothers designed the original one in 1783. Balloons, since they go with the wind rather than against it, don’t have to be aerodynamic – that is, are able to move through the air easily and efficiently. This fact makes ballooning less expensive than you might think.
[3] A basic balloon, like the ones 99% of balloonists have, costs around 7,000 pounds, plus 20 pounds per flying hour running costs. However, if you prefer a more exotic design such as a fairytale castle in the sky, it will set
you back at least 75,000 pounds. These speciallyshaped balloons are almost always used for advertising. Most people interested in ballooning reduce the cost by joining together with likeminded people or by approaching businesses for sponsorship.
[4] Ballooning is not only about flying. It takes two ground crew and one pilot to prepare for takeoff and to deflate the balloon once landed. One of the most important jobs is that of the retriever who has to follow the balloon in a retrieve vehicle wherever it goes. The traditional habit is for the retriever to give a bottle of wine as a token
of
appreciation to the landowner for use on a field for landing.
[5] To become a private balloon pilot, you need to have a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority, to have had sixteen flying hours with an instructor, one solo flight, and to pass a written exam. All this can take between three and twelve months. If your pilot’s licence is
211
part of a business venture, you will need another 100 hours of flight experience to gain a commercial licence.
As a sport ballooning
А36.
1) has several attractive characteristics.
2) is much safer than it used to be.
3) is practised in Britain only.
Зато словосочетание this
The surprising thing about ballooning is that
A37.
1) it is a relaxing sport.
2) people do it for excitement.
3) it is a very simple sport.
абзаца it is a hobby people follow for
3).

think because
1) the mechanism of the balloon isn’t complex.
2) the running costs aren’t as high as you might think.
3) balloons don’t need expensive aerodynamic structures.
212
, since they go
with the wind rather than against it, don’t have to be aerodynamic…».
The retriever has
A39.
1) to help the balloon to land on the ground.
2) to follow the balloon everywhere it goes.
3) to write in advance to the landowner to ask for permission to land.
С

retriever
tо retrieve – доставать, извлекать. Но

the retriever …
has to follow the balloon in a retrieve vehicle

(А43) When Christina Sanchez told her parents that she wanted to become a bullfighter instead of a hairdresser, they weren’t too pleased. But when she was eighteen, her parents realised that she was serious and sent her to a bullfighting school in Madrid, where she trained with professionals.
(А44) Since last July, Sanchez has been the most successful novice in Spain and is very popular with the crowds. After brilliant performances in Latin America and Spain earlier this year, Sanchez has decided that she is ready to take the test to become a matador de toros. Out of the ring, Sanchez does not look like a matador. She is casually elegant, very feminine and wears her long blond hair loose. She seems to move much more like a dancer than an athlete, but in the ring she is all power.
(А45) When she was fourteen, Sanchez’s father warned her that the world of bullfighting was hard enough for a man and even harder for a woman. It seems he is right. “It really is a tough world for a woman,” says Sanchez. “You start with the door shut in your face. A
214
man has to prove himself only once, whereas I have had to do it ten times just to get my foot in the door.”
(А46) Sanchez lives with her family in Parla, south of Madrid. Her family is everything to her and is the main support in her life. “My sisters don’t like bullfighting, they don’t even watch it on TV, and my mother would be the happiest person in the world if I gave it up. But we get on well. Mum’s like my best friend.”
(А47) When Sanchez is not fighting, she has a tough fitness routine – running, working out
in the gym and practising with her father in the afternoon. By nine she is home for supper, and by eleven she is in bed. She doesn’t drink, smoke or socialize. “You have to give up a lot,” says Sanchez. “It’s difficult to meet people, but it doesn’t worry me – love does not arrive because you look for it.”
(А48) Sanchez spends most of the year travelling: in summer to Spanish and French bullfights and in winter to Latin America. Her mother dislikes watching Sanchez fight, but goes to the ring when she can. If not, she waits at home next to the telephone. Her husband has had to ring three times to say that their daughter had been injured, twice lightly in the leg and once seriously in the stomach. After she has been wounded, the only thing Sanchez thinks about is how quickly she can get back to the ring. “It damages your confidence she says “but it also makes you mature
. It’s just unprofessional to be

injured. You cannot let it happen.”
1) Christina’s successful beginning
2) Parents’ resistance
3) Making a career choice
4) Bullfighter career challenges
1) Christina’s professionalism
2) What happens during Christina’s world tours.
3) Christina’s everyday routine
4) The role of family for Christina

Future King Joins Trade Union
[1] It has recently been reported that Prince Charles, Prince of
Wales and heir to the throne of the United Kingdom, has joined a trade union. He has become a member of the trade union for writers, the Society of Authors. Prince Charles, born in 1948, is the author of two books: The Old Man of Lochnagar and A Vision of Britain.
[2] The first book is a children’s story in which a mysterious old man haunts the mountain of Lochnagar in Scotland. The second book
216
has caused a lot of discussion. The matter is that the Prince of Wales is an advocate
of more traditional architecture and would like to witness a return to the principles of classical architecture. It’s only natural that the architects have been angered with his views.
[3] Isn’t it strange that a millionaire of royal blood chose to join the trade union? Of course he can expect some legal services as a member of the Society of Authors. His Union could help him check the contracts with publishers in order to make sure that he is treated fairly. He might use the Society’s photocopying equipment a little cheaper. If he fell on hard times, he could get financial help from the trade union.
[4] Mark le Fanu, General Secretary of the Society of Authors, which was founded in 1884 but didn’t become an official trade union until 1978, is happy to welcome the Prince to the membership of the Union. He thinks it’s unlikely that the Prince will ever need the Union’s legal services. But he is sure that applying
for membership the
Prince displays a true interest in writing.
[5] The Prince doesn’t overestimate his own literary talents. However, the critics say that unlike many other famous people, the Prince of Wales wrote every word of his books himself. The Prince of Wales is not the only and the first notable personage – member of the Society. Such writers as Graham Greene and George Bernard Shaw have also been members. A number of people, who are better known for their public standing than for their writing, have been members, too. Among them is Sir Winston Churchill, the former British Prime Minister, who was really talented with his pen. The Society unites 5,000 members, and many modern politicians are also applying for membership being novelists or thriller writers.

The Pilgrims
(А43) The Pilgrims were puritans, that is to say, people of England who did not agree with the form of religious feelings shown to God and religious services used in the Church of England. King James punished all who refused to follow laws and traditions of the Church of England and to give money to support it. These people had to leave the country and went to Holland trying to find religious freedom there. But they were not allowed to own land in Holland. And besides, they did not want their children to become Dutch speaking people. They wanted to remain English.
(А44) So they soon returned to England with the idea of leaving for America. There, where the lands were still wild, they hoped to build homes for themselves and start a new life based on their own ideas of religious and civil rights. Pilgrim Fathers decided to form a colony that should be governed by just and equal laws, established by common agreement.
(А45) With the idea of a New England in America, some of the strongest English people crossed the Atlantic Ocean on board the little ship “The Mayflower.” These people were independent and Godfearing. Some of them were also learned. The departure of the Pilgrims from England marked a period in history. Towards late November 1620, this company of about a hundred persons, with Captain
219
Miles Standish as their leader, landed on Cape Cod, not far from where Boston now is.
(А46) Shortly after landing, they found a suitable place to live and, about Christmas, began to cut trees and build houses. Winter came on, and they were not prepared for difficult times. Many of them got ill, and about half of them died. But those who survived did not give up; they were not easily discouraged by the difficulties.
(А47) In spring and summer following hard winter, their crops grew, and the colony became rich. They made friends with Indians and were not at all afraid of them. At last they felt sure that they had found the land they had hoped to find for long.
(А48) In the autumn, they decided to have a great holiday and to unite in giving thanks to God for everything they had received. They also invited the local Indians, and all sat down together to celebrate the first Thanksgiving Day in America. This holiday is now celebrated in the USA every year on the fourth Thursday of November.
