TheMass Media |
The significance of the mass media for human life can’t be overestimated. This is true |
because beyond the physical requirements of food and shelter everyone needscommunication, |

entertainmentandinformation.Themassmediacansatisfyalltheserequirementsatthesametime. |
There are 4 main kinds of the mass media. They are newspapers, television, radio and the |
Internet. Everybody can find there something interesting. They inform, educate and entertain |
us. They also influence the way people look at the world and even make them change their |
views. In other words, the mass media play a very important role in moulding public opinion. |
On the radio, one can listen to news, various discussions or commentaries of current events, |
live broadcasts of sport events, weather forecast, and talk shows. Some people like to listen to |
music on the radio. There are 25 thousand radio stations all over the world. |
th |
Television also attracts a large audience. It is one of the greatest achievements of the 20 |
century and one of the most popular kinds of the mass media. There are 2 kinds of television – |
satellite television and cable television. Television brings world to our living rooms. Currently |

the mass media offer us a great variety to choose from. There are many educational, political |

Each of the British newspapers belongs to one of two categories: |

broadsheets and |

the |

world of politics, economics and international relations. Popular newspapers, in their turn, |

report on shocking news, rumours, scandals, and celebrities’ lives. The broadsheets cater for |

and even larger readership than a broadsheet. They contain far less print than the broadsheets |
and far more pictures. They use larger headlines and are written in a simpler style of English. |
The reason that the quality newspapers are called broadsheets and the popular ones are called |
tabloids is because of their different shapes. The broadsheets are twice as large as the tabloids. |

The Internet creation is worth speaking about too. It was created in 1983. The Internet |
