Teenagers’ Problems
There are many problems that young people have to face when they stop being children. At this age, all feelings and emotions are very strong, all problems seem very important.
The first problem is misunderstanding from parents. They often try to gain independence from their parents. There are many different sources of conflict between teenagers and their parentssuchasdishonesty, smoking, messyroomandgrades.Untidinessandhouseholdchores are the most common arguments between parents and teenagers. On the one hand, parents go mad over untidy rooms, clothes dropped on the floor and their children’s refusal to help with the housework. On the other hand, teenagers lose their patience when parents tell them off for dropping the towel in the bathroom or not cleaning up their room.
Different parents have different approaches to these problems. Some approaches are much more successful than others. Those parents who yell at their teens for their untidiness, but later clear up after them, have fewer chances of changing their teens’ behavior. On the contrary, parents who let teenagers experience the consequences of their actions are more successful. For instance, when teenagers who don’t help their parents with the shopping don’t find their favourite food in the fridge, they are forced to reconsider their actions.
Sometimes teenagers may also face misunderstanding from teachers. They complain that their teachers think that youth is given for studying and not for playing and trying things.
98
As teenagers have the opinion that parents and teachers can’t take teenagers seriously, they formtheirownsocialgroups,whicharecalledsubcultures.Teens’subcultureisapartofculture. It reveals itself in many features – clothes, styles of favourite music, way of life, the choice of friends and other aspects.
Many groups of teenagers follow a certain fashion which requires wearing a certain piece of clothes (like jeans, army boots, bandanas), jewellery (like earrings for boys), certain hairdos (ponytail, shavedheads, dyedhair).Somegirlsandboysgoonacrashdiettoslimdowninorder to look attractive. Others may suffer from acne and pimples.
Most teenagers see adult life as a life full of freedom, independence and great opportunities. Only very few of them realize how much responsibility they will have. They often get into trouble because for many of them being adult means staying out at night, trying “adult things” like smoking or drinking alcohol.
