(1)Each term, an increasing number of young people are excluded from school in Britain for a range of reasons. These include truancy, expulsion, or because their parents’ work involves traveling. Some academics now believe that the ‘virtual classroom’, using computer networks, could be the best way to lure these young people back to some form of learning.
(2)Currently, in most local authorities, the availability of ‘home tuition’ ranges from sparse to nonexistent. The results of this are predictable. More young people will be living on state benefits or on the proceeds of pick-pocketing or burglaries. Suppose, though, that someone provided a young person with a computer that set him interesting work to do at home, at his own pace, without fear of failure or ridicule. One can contact a tutor when he needs help and chat to other pupils in his group from the peace and quiet of his home.
(3)Treated seriously by adults, such a student might regain some pride and self-respect. He might eventually sit a few exams and get some qualifications and actually do quite well. The point is that nobody will know until someone gives the idea a proper trial, with good equipment and software, high-quality teachers and adequate funding. A research team led by Stephen Heppell of Anglia University’s Ultralab is doing just that.
(4)The plan is to start with a pilot group of 30 teenagers who are not in full-time education for a variety of reasons. Much has to be worked out, which is why this is a pilot project. There are quite a few problems to solve. What will the on-screen tasks look like? What about pupils with literacy problems? Who will be the tutors? How will targets be set? What about the pupils who drop out?
(5)In a sense, all of these problems, though they demand attention, add up to theoretical detail. The real issues, however, concern a change in the willingness and positive attitudes in the government and educational bodies. If this is to be achieved, then all those involved will be acknowledging that school is not the only answer and that there are other routes to learning.

(A43) ___Our high schools are designed to prepare students for college, not the world most will enter. Parents are influenced by society and they want their children to reflect the ideal for success, that is, academics with music lessons on the side, becoming a polished professional, achieving a status that can change the world. Parents want the education system to maintain high standards so their child has opportunity to achieve this ideal. This sounds great in theory — one out of a thousand will achieve that ideal. The problem is, this standard robs non-college students’ job skills they need to enter the real world.
(A44) ___From the beginning of man to the late 1800s, an educational institution was the only source of information and attending them was the only way to acquire information. Times have changed. Today, we are an information society with hundreds of sources of information. Last year’s facts, or yesterday’s, may not have any value today. Skills learned today will soon become obsolete and new skills must be mastered. For this reason, knowing how to learn, search for and acquire information is more valuable than being a learner-of-facts. Because most high schools students enter the work force, their knowledge should be measured by their ability to acquire information and turn it into useful knowledge rather than their ability to memorize. For some licensed professions such as lawyers and doctors, learner-of-facts is a necessity.
(A45) ___American students score below many other countries in math and science. What is not understood, many low scoring students are technicians who continue to keep this nation a leader of technology. That is because the same students who show limited interest in learning academics demonstrate great skills and confidence in creating new concepts. Creating the new motivates technicians whereas mastering the old does not.

(A46) ___There are, however, more serious problems to deal with. At present 40% of teenagers in the US drop out of high school. In some high schools, 70% of the teenagers drop out. Today’s education system is an outdated product that is being reject by an increasing number of people. There are alternatives that will motivate teenagers to seek a productive lifestyle.
(A47) ___The typical high school teaches 30% of its students to be failures. This is because the curriculum only recognizes academic skills and students intelligence is measured by this standard. Nonacademic skills and associated intelligence are ignored. A person who has the ability to be a first class welder is labeled a failure. He may never become a welder because self-fulfilling prophecy, based on academics, will determine his fate.
(A48) ___Teenagers are put in jail because they refuse to conform to passive classroom learning environments. Because the education system labels them FAILURES, they turn to criminal activity to be recognized. Every young teenager wants to learn, be recognized, be somebody and excel. If they can’t do it in the classroom, they will find another outlet, usually one that leads to self-destruction.

(1) The greatest buzz I’ve felt during the past five years was one afternoon on the seventh floor of the car park at Hong Kong’s old Kai Tak airport. It was a warm Friday a few weeks before the airport closed in 1998. I’d been writing a feature article about the new airport for the last few days and had just sent it off to a newspaper so I had a free af-

ternoon. I couldn’t afford to go shopping – when you’re freelance you never have any money – and I’d heard about the locals who regularly gathered in the car park to watch the jumbo jets landings.
(2)The group of locals welcomed me into their world, warmly applauding some of the landings and being less complimentary about others. They were local heroes to me; animated, cheerful souls passionate about their beloved airport. It was a ground-breaking trip from which I sold many stories.
(3)And it was about this time that my life finally started to come together, too. Once again, Hong Kong had worked its magic. My life always changes there. Ten years earlier, as a result of my first visit, I’d won the Observer’s first Young Travel Writer award. There are few better places to send budding travel writers. If you have nothing to say about Hong Kong, you should consider a career in soft furnishings instead.
(4)I would probably have gone into writing anyway, sneaking in through the back door, but much, much later. Winning the Observer award threw me through the reception window. It was an official recommendation saying, ‘you’ve got a talent, use it’. I was 21 when I won, a cheeky young man falling in and out of love and jobs every five minutes. Suddenly I’d won this great award, but was too young to know what to do with it. I realized I could write but knew nothing about the travel business or writing markets. Instead I retreated into a lonely existence, working through the night on bad novels that couldn’t possibly sell. I had a lot of growing up to do.
(5)For many years that followed I was a piece of driftwood, floating on an ocean of uncertainty, writing occasional travel pieces here and there, but still playing at writing, not really focused. It wasn’t an easy decade. It was ten years after the award before I felt like a proper writer. Regular commissions arrived and editors phoned me. Writing is a pain, and there’s nothing as enjoyable. The desire to write is a bug you can’t shake. It’s scary, precarious, and a nervous existence. You may get two commissions the same day, and then never work again. And while it’s never easy it’s very rewarding. You never know what’s around the next corner, but that’s life.
