(1)Over the last century the world has become increasingly smaller. Media, technology and the opening of borders has enabled the world’s citizens to view, share and gain access to a much wider range of cultures, societies and world views. In this melting pot that the world has become, children must be supplied with certain tools to process all this information. Included in this list of ‘tools’ are: education, social skills, cultural awareness and the acquisition of languages, the most important of these being the latter.
(2)Until recently, a child who had the ability to speak more than one language would have been considered a very rare entity. Nowadays, in the majority of North American and European countries, most children are given the opportunity to learn a second or even a third language. Children acquire these foreign languages through various and diverse means. In many countries, learning a foreign language is a compulsory subject in the state school curriculum. In other instances, children are born to bilingual parents, who, if they so desire, may teach the children two languages.
(3)Bringing up one’s child bilingually is not a decision to be taken lightly. Both parents must consider long and hard the implications involved in raising a child in a two-language home. This decision has a two-fold effect. Firstly, of course, the child learns the two languages of the parents. Secondly, the parents’ decision will influence factors which will have a far-reaching effect on the child’s life. Some of these factors include: style and place of education; diameter of social circle; employment potential and preference; and, most importantly, the way in which the child views himself and his global environment.
(4)One of the more advantageous by-products of being a member of a bilingual family is the inherent awareness of two different cultures. On a more abstract level, it has been said that a bilingual child thinks differently from a monolingual child. Current research in linguistics indicates that there may be a strong correlation between bilingualism and cognitive skills. This new research concerns itself with the fact that a bilingual child has two lexical structures for any given physical or abstract entity. This leads logically to the assumption that the child

also has two associations for many words, as a word can mean different things in different languages. Researchers maintain that this elasticity of ideas may allow the child to think more flexibly and, therefore, more creatively.

(A43) ___Each language has its dialects and we can travel across one country and find that each region speaks in quite a different dialect and that accents differ from one place to another. Then, we can take the example of English which has an impressive variety depending on the countries where it is spoken.
(A44) ___The fact that English has been spoken in England for 1,500 years but in Australia for only 200, explains why we have a great wealth of regional dialects in England that is more or less totally lacking in Australia. It is often possible to tell where an English person comes from to within about fifteen miles or less. In Australia, where there has not been enough time for changes to bring about any regional variation, it is almost impossible to tell where someone comes from at all, although very small differences are now beginning to appear.
(A45) ___The origin of English proper is the English spoken throughout the UK. The “Upper Crust” use a particular variety of spoken English known as RP or “Received Pronunciation”. RP is what the royal family and those educated at Oxford, Cambridge and other high-level universities were taught to use and speak.
(A46) ___One of the most distinctive varieties of English is American English. This category of English actually consists of several variations. There are recognizable variations in the spoken English of the South, the Pennsylvania Dutch, New England of the U.S., the Midwestern U.S. and the West coast. There is also “Black English” spoken as a distinct racial community variety of English across the USA.

(A47) ___It is unlikely however that there will ever be as much dialectal variation in Australia as there is in England. This is because modern transport and communication conditions are very different from what they were 1,500 or even one-hundred years ago. Even though English is now spoken in many different parts of the world many thousands miles apart, it is very unlikely that English will ever break up into a number of different non-intelligent languages in the same way that Indo-European and Germanic did. German and Norwegian became different languages because the ancestors of the speakers of these two languages moved apart geographically, and were no longer in touch and communicating with one another.
(A48) ___In the modern world, barring unforeseen catastrophes, this will not happen, at least in the near future. As long as Americans and British people, for instance, are in touch with one another and want to communicate with one another, it is unlikely that their dialects will drift so far apart as to become different languages.
