(1)The typical Romantics were young men, often university students, although they didn’t always take their studies very seriously. They had a strong anti-middle class approach to life and would refer to the police or their landladies as “philistines”, or simply as “the enemy”. The first generation of Romantics was young in about 1800, and we could actually label the Romantic Movement as the first of Europe’s student uprisings.
(2)The Romantics were not very different from the hippies of the 1960s and 70s. “Idleness is the ideal of genius, and indolence the virtue of the Romantic” was their motto. It was the duty of the Romantic to experience life uniquely – to dream himself away from it. Day-to-day business could be taken care of by the “philistines”.
(3)Both Byron and Shelley were Romantic poets. Byron, moreover, provided the Romantic Age with its idol, the Byronic hero – the alien, moody, rebellious spirit – in life as well as art. Byron had a profound impact on European and especially French Romanticism. The influence derived mainly from a character type, the “Byronic hero”, first portrayed in Child Harold and thereafter developed in many of his other works.
(4)This figure haunted XVIII and XIX century literature. He is a man greater than others in emotion, capability and suffering. Only among wild and vast forms of nature, the ocean, the precipices and glaciers of the Alps can he find a counterpart to his own titanic passions. No one can resist his hypnotic fascination and authority. Against his own suffering, he brings a superhuman pride.

(5) Many readers assume that this hero was Byron’s projection of how he understood his own self, although considerably exaggerated. They say that Byron lived a wanderer’s life, running away from a mysterious sin he committed when young, constantly looking for new challenges or even new confrontation. The remark is somewhat unfounded, since it takes the premise that Byron was lonely, angry and unloved. It only takes a slightly more careful reading of Byron’s works to realize that the writer’s real portrait is quite different.

(A43) ___What is culture? Some experts say that it is what is at the core of an individual’s behavior and his degree of assimilation into a particular environment. Others define it as what everybody knows what everybody else knows, within a group. It has also been described as the system of social institutions, traditions, values, and beliefs as well as that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, moral customs and values.
(A44) ___When we talk about values, we are not referring to absolute facts, but rather to traits that seem more obvious and openly recognized and practiced by the majority. One such value would be that, in general, Anglo-Americans tend to consider their personal goals over group goals because they are generally goaland future oriented, especially when it comes to monetary security. To prepare and save for the future is a common Anglo trait, as well as is the tendency to strive for material comfort.
(A45) ___Another area in which the Anglo tendency toward being goal oriented is seen is in communication. When Anglos converse, it is usually oriented toward exchanging information in a quick and efficient manner. A direct question often leads to a direct response, often without a great deal of polite small talk. This may explain why Anglo-American tourists are often viewed as pushy and rude in other countries. They simply don’t want to “waste” time on small talk.

(A46) ___One more Anglo-American characteristic which differs from many other cultures involves the raising of children. Strict discipline, which may include physical punishment, is considered acceptable.
(A47) ___Other typically Anglo-American beliefs that the reader will probably recognize are the following: Man has power over nature, and nature itself has its laws – everything that happens can be scientifically explained. Also, being the first to climb the ladder of success is important and one must strive to be the best; hard work is rewarded, as well as adhering to a time schedule. Anglos are more likely to be competitive instead of cooperative, and, aggressiveness and ability are believed to be responsible for leading a person to great achievements, not fate or destiny.
(A48) ___Because Anglo-American values are such an integral part of their behavior, they can have a considerable impact on the way they teach. Personal goals are valued over the goals of the group. A teacher can attend more easily to the needs of a few “good students” and leave the rest of the class behind. However, this can also go in a more positive direction in which a few students who are struggling to keep up are helped along, even at the expense of the rest of the class.
