(1) The Paralympic Games are an elite multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities. The name derives from the Greek “para” (“beside” or “alongside”) and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. No relation with
52
paralysis is intended. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games.. The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics, which are only for people with intellectual disabilities.
(2)The Games were held first in 1948, involving war veterans with spinal cord injuries. The first Olympic-style games for athletes with a disability were held in Rome in 1960. The first Winter Paralympics were held in Sweden in 1976. The Summer Paralympics have long been held in the conjunction with the Olympic Games in the same host city. This practice was adopted in 1992 for the Winter Paralympics, too. The Games take place three weeks after the closing of the Olympics, in the same host city and using the same facilities.
(3)The Deaflympics are an event at which deaf athletes compete at an elite level. The Games are held every 4 years. The first games, held in Paris, were also the first ever international sporting event for athletes with a disability. The event has been held every four years since. At the first Games, 145 athletes from nine European nations took part. In 2005 the 20th Games were held in Australia and according to the official website more than 3,000 deaf athletes and officials from 75 nations participated.
(4)To qualify for the games, athletes must have a hearing loss of at least 55 decibels in their “better ear”. Hearing aids and the like are not allowed to be used in competition, to place all athletes on the same level. Other examples of ways the games vary from hearing competitions are the manner in which they are officiated. The football referees wave a flag instead of blowing a whistle. On the track, races are started by using a light flash, instead of a starter pistol.

(A43) ___When traditional sports seem outdated and don’t give you the same buzz, you might develop a desire to push the limits of
54
physical ability, to go right to the edge, and beyond. If so, you may well be in the process of becoming an adrenaline junkie...
Have no fear, all is not lost – you can get your kicks from extreme sports! Pit your skill and determination against the elements, on snow or cliff faces, in the air or water, over land and sea –there are extreme sports activities just waiting for you to get stuck into!
(A44) ___Paintball is a sport in which participants use compressed-gas markers to shoot paintballs at other players. Once marked by a paintball, a player is eliminated from the game. There are over 10 million paintball players and thousands of people can attend the major paintball tournaments.
(A45) ___There are three very popular paintball games. Capture the Flag is the classic schoolyard game with a paintball twist. Teams start on opposing sides and attempt to acquire the opponents’ flag while protecting their own. Victory is achieved by being the first team to hang the opponents’ flag on the designated location at or near their own starting location. Centre Flag, Similar to Capture the Flag, starts with a single flag at the centre of the field instead of one at each end. The winner is the team that brings the flag to the opponents’ end of the field. With Elimination, the team that eliminates all opposing players wins.
(A46) ___There are various styles of play. Woodsball, paintball’s first well-known form, is generally played in a wooded area large enough to hold dozens of players. Woodsball games generally run for more time than speedball games. Speedball is a faster, closer-quarters game and is played on a field about the size of a basketball court or two. Artificial barriers or bunkers are placed throughout the field for players to move between and hide behind. The close quarters foster a lot of movement and “bunkering”, or running up to an opposing player’s bunker and eliminating them from close range. Most national and local tournaments and leagues are built around speedball.
(A47) ___Scenario paintball games are often larger-scale re-enactments of historical battles involving hundreds of people, such as the Battle of Normandy, or modern scenarios such as storming a building and rescuing hostages. Scenario games can last hours or even days, and bigger games often have player re-insertions at set intervals.

(A48) ___The great news is that the UK has some of the best extreme sports facilities and locations in the world. However, when playing at a field for the first time, be sure to check up on the field rules. Variations of the following rules are in effect at most fields. There are well established professional and semi professional leagues in North America and Europe including the Paintball Association in the UK.
