(1) Steven Jobs is an American computer executive, who co-founded Apple Computer, one of the first manufacturers of personal computers. Jobs went to high school in Los Altos, California, and attended lectures

at Hewlett-Packard Co. in Palo Alto after school. He attracted the attention of the company president and was hired as a summer employee. He worked there with Stephen Wozniak, an electronics inventor. In 1972 Jobs graduated from high school and entered Reed College, but he dropped out after one semester. He joined Atari in 1974 as a designer of video games. After several months he quit his job and made a trip to India in search of spiritual enlightenment.
(2)Upon his return to California, Jobs found that Wozniak, who still worked for Hewlett-Packard, had become involved with a group of young electronics enthusiasts in a computer club. Jobs, who was interested in marketing, persuaded Wozniak to work with him. Together they designed and built a prototype of the Apple I, a preassembled computer circuit board, in Jobs’ parents’ garage. A local electronics equipment retailer ordered twenty-five of the machines, and Wozniak quit his job to become the vice president in charge of research and development of the new venture. They formed the Apple Computer Company in April 1976.
(3)The Apple I was offered at a price of $666.66 and sold six hundreds units, chiefly to hobbyists and electronics enthusiasts. The Apple II followed shortly, keeping the simplicity and compactness of the Apple I, but more suited to the general user. Apple Computer was incorporated in 1977 and became phenomenally successful. In 1983 Apple introduced the Lisa, a personal computer primarily designed for business use that incorporated a handheld “mouse” to select commands and control an on-screen cursor. The Lisa was followed by the Macintosh personal computer, aimed at the general user to provide easy and affordable access to information and computing power.
(4)Throughout the early 1980s Jobs led the company as it developed and sold personal computers, software, and printers throughout the world. In 1986 Jobs purchased the computer division of motion-picture studio Lucasfilm Ltd. incorporating the division as Pixar Animation Studios. Pixar became a leader in computer animation and in developing software for advanced computer graphics. In 1995 Pixar completed Toy Story, the first fully computer-generated feature film.

(A43) ___Ask any preteen how they love to spend their spare time, and chances are you’ll get an earful about video games. But why do they love them so? Are they addictive? According to some studies it would appear that the excitement of video games causes the brain to release a chemical that is, in essence, addictive. For any parent who has seen the fervor with which some kids play video games, this news is no surprise.
(A44) ___Media literacy specialist, Dr. Charles Ungerleider explains that the games “are very compelling with increasing complexity, so a child becomes more facile, yet wants to know more and apply new skills.” While wanting to improve their game isn’t a problem in itself, it becomes one if video games are “taking a youngster away too much from other activities,” says Ungerleider. “Then the parent has to intervene and limit the amount of time the youngster spends with the video game.”
(A45) ___Professor of Computer Science, Maria Klavee feels video games, if not too violent, can “offer some real opportunities for puzzle solving, strategic and critical thinking”. But she adds that it’s important that video and computer games are played in moderation. Klavee says parents should “provide a selection of activities, not just the ones that have the most action or are addictive. Choose some that involve problem solving or good story lines. Also aim for a balance in your child’s life. Sports are important, reading’s important. Just think of computer games as one more component in a child’s exploration of what’s out there in society.”
(A46) ___As for addiction Ungerleider believes that “a parent can prevent youngsters from becoming addicted to too much TV or too many video games by establishing a pattern of selective viewing or by using video game material early in a child’s life so that by the time a youngster gets to be an adolescent and there’s very little surveillance or control, it’s less likely to occur.” Finally, Ungerleider reminds parents that “if a youngster becomes addicted to video games it can be a problem and the parent does need to intervene and provide attractive alternatives.”

(A47) ___When’s the last time you observed the computer and video games your children play? Well once you do, don’t be surprised if you find yourself suddenly laying down some ground rules on the types of games that come into your home, and the hours spent playing them. “Violence is inherently attention grabbing, or seems to be inherently attention grabbing for most people”, explains Craig Anderson, with the Department of Psychology at Iowa State University and one of the authors of “The Influence of Media Violence on Youth” published by the American Psychological Society. But because kids get used to violent images quickly, the level of violence has to increase in order to keep their attention, and keep selling games. The research says violent media reveals unequivocal evidence that viewing violent films and playing computer games increase the likelihood of aggressive behavior.
(A48) ___So what can parents do about violent games? Anderson says the first step is awareness. Simply being mindful of the games children are playing may well be all it takes to encourage parents to lay down rules as to the types of games allowed in their home. “I think that for a lot of parents it will be quite a shocker and, once they see what it is that their kids are consuming, they won’t need an expert telling them to pay attention,” says Anderson. “They will, in fact, on their own say ‘you know this is not appropriate for my 6-year-old or my 12-year-old, so we’re going to make some changes in the rules of the household’.”
