Editing Audio

Editing and mixing audio in Adobe Audition

Adobe Audition lets you use advanced post-production techniques to create and edit audio. If you have installed Adobe Audition, you can apply the Edit In Adobe Audition command to an audio clip. If you are using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and later, you can send an entire sequence to Adobe Audition.

When you apply the Edit In Audition command to an audio clip, the audio is extracted and the edits are made to a new clip containing the extracted audio. The audio in the original master video clip is preserved.

When applying the Edit In Audition command to clips in a sequence, Adobe Premiere Pro renders the audio into a new audio clip that is imported into Adobe Audition. When saved, the edited clip replaces the original clip in the Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline panel. The original master clip in the Project panel is untouched. Effects or markers applied to the original sequence clip are preserved in the edited clip.

Note: The Edit In Audition command is not available for Adobe Dynamic Link clips.

Here is an excellent collection of tutorials on how to use Adobe Audition.

Here is a video tutorial by Andrew Devis on the Creative COW website showing how to get audio into Audition. Also shown is how to level speech in Audition so that the quiet bits of speech can be raised up automatically to ensure that all the audio can be clearly heard.

Edit audio in Adobe Audition (CS5.5)

1In a Project or Timeline panel, select a clip containing audio.

2Select Edit > Edit In Adobe Audition > Clip.

3Edit and save the clip in Adobe Audition.

4Return to Adobe Premiere Pro.

The file remains open in Audition until you close it, so you can repeat steps 3-4 for further audio editing.

From the Project panel, the Undo command deletes the extracted audio clip that’s been edited in Adobe Audition. For a clip in a sequence, the Undo command reverses the render and replace actions by returning the original audio clip to the sequence. In this case, the newly created audio file is not deleted from the Project panel.

Export sequence tracks to Adobe Audition (CS5.5)

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and later and Adobe Audition CS5.5 and later directly exchange audio between sequences and multitrack sessions. Any sequence markers appear in Audition, and separate tracks can be retained for maximum editing flexibility.

The applications exchange sequences and sessions using a shared XML format, exported to a folder that contains any referenced audio files.

1 Choose Edit > Edit in Adobe Audition > Sequence.

Editing Audio

2Specify a name and path for the exported sequence folder, and set the following options:

Selection Choose Entire Sequence to include the full timeline duration, or Work Area to include the time range specified by the work area bar.

Audio Handles For trimmed audio, specifies the number of seconds to include beyond trim handles. Including additional audio provides more flexibility for fades and editing.

Export Preview Video Includes a DV preview file that you can visually reference while mixing audio. The frame rate matches the sequence rate where possible, or the closest frame rate available for DV format.

Note: Rendering the video preview can require a large amount of time and disk space.

Render Audio Clip Effects Permanently applies audio effects from Adobe Premiere Pro to the exported clip. Select this option if you are confident that effect settings are final. For maximum flexibility, deselect it, and apply effects in Adobe Audition.

Send Clip Volume Keyframe Metadata Includes these keyframes so you can adjust them in Adobe Audition, rather than applying them to rendered audio.

Open in Adobe Audition Automatically opens the sequence in Adobe Audition. Deselect this option if you plan to mix the audio later or transfer it to a different machine.

Editing audio clips in Adobe Audition (CS5.5)

After you send your sequence to Adobe Audition, you will need to edit the audio clips. For more information about how to edit the audio clips, see Edit audio clips from Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 or After Effects.

Export a multitrack mix to Adobe Premiere Pro

Once audio editing and mixing is complete, send (or “round-trip”) the multitrack mix back to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and later. To do this, see Export a multitrack mix to Premiere Pro CS5.5 in Adobe Audition Help.
