Unit 10 (26). Diet. Healthy food. Obesity.

Ex.1. Skim the text and be ready to speak about healthy food:

Mention diet and most people think of slimming. However, the word “diet” really means “a way of eating” and a normal diet means a way of eating which gives your body all the ingredients it needs to keep it in tip-top condition.

Meat, fish, cheese, eggs, nuts and pulses (that is various peas and beans) are full of protein which gives you energy.

Fruit and green vegetables provide you with the materials that makes your digestion work efficiently. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and green vegetables, is essential if you want glowing, healthy skin. As this vitamin cannot be stored in the body, you use a good supply every day.

Milk, cream and cheese supply you with calcium for your teeth, bones and nails. Milk and yoghurt also supply you with vitamins A and D – the vitamin which you also get from sunshine. These are also good for your skin and for your hair.

Wholemeal bread also provides roughage and is a valuable source of vitamin B.

The food to avoid, if you want to stay slim and healthy, are the ones that are fattening without being nutritious.

These are white bread, cakes, sweets, biscuits, jams, fizzy drinks – everything in fact, which contains lots of starch and sugar. Sugary foods are also very bad for the teeth.

The Diet. Vitamins. Water

If a person wants to be in good health he must be careful about his diet. It is very important to know that a diet must consist of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, water and vitamins.

In a hospital the doctor usually prescribes the type of diet which patients must have. Any patient with high temperature has a very poor appetite. A nurse must be very careful with him. The diet of such patients must be fluid or semi-solid. You can treat many diseases by diet. People must chew the food well and never eat anything too hot or too cold.

Vitamins play a very important role in human health. About 20 vitamins are known today. Vitamins increase the resistance of the organism to infection, help to improve poor blood circulation, strengthen the nervous system, protect eyesight, help the body in formation of bones and strong teeth. Overdosage of some vitamins may be harmful, so people must take normal doses2 of vitamins. Winter is the time for virus infections, colds and flu and your resistance is especially low. Take vitamins A, D, C every day.

Water is very important for all living things. It carries foodstuffs from one part of the body to another. More than 70% of our body is composed of water.
