Treating an infant’s heart

Pediatricians know that many babies in the world born with congenital heart disease are able to live only to the age of 12 months. And only some of them live average 12—13 years.

The successes gained in cardiosurgery in recent years have opened up great opportunities for surgical treatment of babies with congenital heart disease

Tо save the babies’ life the doctors must perform the complex operations in their first year of life. It is known that in children 2—4 years of age serious complications are developed due to cardiac pathology which is impossible to treat even if the operation is successful.

Some departments were organized in Ukraine for emergency surgery and intensive therapy for infants under 12 months with congenital heart disease. Every year many infants are operated on here.

The most operations performed here are successful because the surgeons and other medical personnel have professional skill and know-how. In this business one has to know the specifics of looking after a baby who has been operated on. Doctors help mothers to care for their babies but also keep an eye on its diet. The doctors' aim is to save the most of the babies.

Scientists meet and exchange their knowledge and know-how. The research works are published in medical journals so that any cardiosurgeon can make use of them.
