Mark: Well, I suppose my job is pretty stressful. All medical staff have pretty stressful jobs, but working in the Accident and Emergency department is particularly bad. We have to be ready to react quickly and efficiently, and often people’s lives are at stake. Sometimes it can be really exhilarating, but it’s also exhausting, both mentally and physically. I find it really difficult to unwind when I go home, I mean, I can’t just go home and sit and watch TV, or, or read a book, I’m too tense and get really fidgety. Some people find it’s good to talk about their work – you know, go out for a couple of drinks after work and all that, but I don’t. I prefer to get away from it. Do some sport, may be running, go to the gym or play a game of squash. Squash is really good. You can thrash out all the pent-up stress and release all tension and I find it really helps me just empty my mind and switch off.
Kay: I live about sixty miles away from where I work, and I commute in and out every day on a really busy commuter train. Sometimes there’s nowhere to sit down and you have to stand up all the way. I find it really stressful. There are mobile phones ringing all the time, and kids listening to their MP3 players and the sight of all those bored, grey faces is really soul-destroying. After a long day at work I get home feeling totally drained and it often gives me a headache. I usually run a hot bath, play some soft music and curl up with a good book for an hour or so, and that really helps. That and cooking – I find that all the preparation involved really helps me unwind.
Liz: I’ve got two little boys. One’s just turned two and the other’ nine months old. They’re lovely kids, but sometimes they just totally exhaust me. They continually want attention, whether they’re hungry or tired or just bored. And I know I’m really lucky because I can afford not to go to work, so I get to spend all day with them, and that a lot of mothers have to share their energy between work and being with the children, but sometimes I really miss adult company … being around kids all day can make you feel pretty stupid… I sometimes feel like my brain is turning to pulp. Sometimes, when I really tired and stressed out I just sit down and cry. When it gets that bad, I leave the kids with their grandmother and dedicate a day to my mind going to a film, or an art exhibition, reading the newspaper from cover to cover or maybe just meeting a friend for a long lunch and some adult conversation.
