42. Exam link
Speak about a person who influenced your life.
You should say:
Who this person is
What he / she is like
What is special about this person
And explain how he / she affected your life.
Example:
I could start off by saying, that for each of us there is one person who has been made difference in our lives. A family member, a friend or a teacher can make the difference. Sometimes these changes become part of our lives and are not easy to forget. The person who has been influential in my life is my mother. She is the person whom I will always love and respect.
The first thing I should mention is that my mother is a very attentive and caring person. In spite of her hard work commitments she is always there when I need her. She will always take the time to listen to me and help me to solve my problems. Now that I have grown up I can’t but admire her great patience. She always keeps her emotions and hardly ever loses her temper.
On top of that the most especial thing about my mum is that she gives advice in a special way without putting any pressure on me or offending my pride. I remember hesitating what career to choose. Being a successful chemist my mother wanted me to follow in her footsteps, but I liked education field. She was experienced enough to leave the decision to me. So when I entered the University to become a teacher she said: “Grab it with both hands”.
Also, I suppose I should say that my mother has always had faith in my abilities, so I have grown a confident person. I remember when I was a school girl I studied at the art school, but I couldn’t paint like my friends. I felt almost discouraged. Then my mother made me realize the need to try harder and encouraged me not to give up painting. Eventually, I had honors diploma in painting.
Finally, I should say that the way my mother treated me and taught me life affected me greatly. I am what I am due to her patience and great life experience.

WRITING. The essay “The most influential person in my life”. 43. a) Study the essay format. In pairs discuss how you can organize this type of essay. |
The essay format
INTRODUCTION Paragraph 1. Make the purpose of the essay clear. |
|
MAIN BODY Paragraph 2- 3-4. Provide general background information describing the person’s character. Each paragraph discusses one specific way the person has influenced you. Give some (two or three) examples that illustrate the point, being sure to explicitly state how the advice, encouragement, or other behavior caused you to alter your behavior in a positive manner. |
|
CONCLUSION Paragraph 5. End with a thesis statement that sums up what you have learned. Create a sense of finality by restating the paper’s thesis and topic points. e.g. Imagine what your life might have been like had you not crossed paths with the person. Remind readers what you learned and how it continues to shape your life. |
b) Read the text below and divide it into 5 paragraphs. Compare your answer with your partner and discuss how you decide when to begin a new paragraph. Define the main idea of each paragraph.
An influential person is someone that can change your life, by giving you good advice and supporting you. He/ she can leave lasting impressions on you. For example, my older brother Mike whose impact on my life can hardly be underestimated. He was always there for me when I needed him. The reason I picked my brother is because he’s the only one I could count on. He’s like the best friend whom I could just tell my problems to. I can talk to him about school, friends, and tell him when I had problems with my mother. He would always take the time to listen and try to solve my problems. I was never a bright student. I always had difficulty in learning. For me to learn something my brother had to repeat it to me a couple of times and explain it to me slowly, step by step so I could understand it. Sometimes I felt frustrated, at times I gave up trying. Since I was too shy to ask the teachers for help, I used to make believe that I understood the work. When I arrived home I always asked my brother for help. He would sit down next to me and have the patience to show me how to do the work and explain it. Another example of how my brother was an important person in my life was when I was a freshman. In high school I started to hang out with the wrong crowd. It was six of my friends and I. We used to cut school together by going everywhere. We used to go to the movies, the park, and each other’s houses. My brother always told me to choose my friends carefully. He told me “you never know who you are hanging out with. If you hang with the wrong crowd, you are never going to get anywhere with them. The only thing that’s going to happen is that you are going to drop out of school”. If it were not for him I wouldn’t have ever finished high school and received my diploma. He is the one that gave me encouragement to move on in my life and to go to college to be somebody. But for Mike, maybe I wouldn’t be in college right now.
c) Write an essay on the topic “Each of us has one person who has made a difference in our lives. For some of us this person may be a family member; for others – a teacher; for others – a friend. Think of the one person who has been the most influential in your life. Describe the influence that person had on you, and explain why you believe she/he has been so important in your life”.
