12. Read the text below. In pairs discuss if you agree with the statement that good looks are important. Use the Essential Strategy Language. Top 10 reasons why physical appearance is so important?
Looks matter a lot in many situations. If you look good, you feel good. Every person wants to look his best. Physical appearance does affect your overall personality. Those who are fortunate to be born beautiful or handsome have an edge over others in their public dealings.
People all over the world spend millions of dollars to look good. They undergo plastic surgery, visit the beauty parlor regularly and undergo herbal treatments to improve their physical appearance. Why so? Why one needs to look good?
1) To impress people in social situations.
2) To look one’s best in work place, where one deals with the public. For example, film stars have to look gorgeous and handsome.
3) One feels good if one looks good.
4) A physically attractive person attracts a lot of people. A handsome man or a beautiful woman is much admired in society.
5) It helps in building up relationships. A handsome boy attracts a lot of girls. Similarly, even girls, who are beautiful, are much sought after.
6) Physical appearance does matter in a relationship. In a marriage, the partners need to take care of themselves physically in order to sustain their relationship. Many women face marital problems as they go out of shape after having children. Those women who take care of their physical appearance have better rapport with their partner.
7) It boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. One feels very reassured when other people admire them and prefer to associate with them as they find them very attractive. In certain professions looks make a lot of difference. A model has to look his or her best. A good looking salesperson can get noticed quickly.
8) A pleasing face is nice to look at. People like to relax in the presence of beautiful things. A pleasant face can relax the mind. Those with an aesthetic sense like to admire beautiful people and things.
9) An attractive physical appearance enhances personality. It is an added advantage.
10) A physically attractive person, who is well-groomed, can impress people. A handsome politician can draw the attention of the masses, although, of course, he also has to be man of substance. For example, former president John F. Kennedy was known for his looks, although he was an astute politician as well. Looks enhanced his public image.
13. Read texts 1-6 about people’s views on the problem of judging a person by external appearances. Which of them are in favour of the problems, which of them are against? In pairs discuss your opinion on the problem. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
1) It makes sense. People who are in certain moods display certain facial expressions pertaining to their mood. People who constantly display a particular facial expression will age their skin in a certain manner resulting from the constant tension or relaxation of certain muscles and areas of skin. A person who smiles a lot may develop endearing crows feet. A person who constantly holds tension or scowls will develop forehead wrinkles etc. From this our ancestors distinguished between friendly jovial strangers and aggressive dangerous ones. This has led to an acute ability to sometimes (not always) accurately judge a person by their appearance. This is simply unproven observations to be fair.
2) The external appearance does not reveal one's exact character and personality although it may sometimes provide a vague idea about them. Therefore judging a person by his external appearance may be very misleading and sometimes very dangerous too. For example, there was a person in my neighborhood who had been involved in some criminal operations, but none of the neighbors suspected him because he appeared in the neighborhood as a very decent and peaceful person. However, he finally got caught by the police and only then the entire neighborhood became aware of his real character.
3) It is irrational to judge a person by his external appearance because such a judgment is not only hasty but also based purely on assumptions that can be far from reality. Instead, a rational judgment on a person should be based on his or her qualities, attitudes, values, capabilities etc., and therefore requires a thorough understanding of this person. For example, an employee who has a very smart appearance may not be as smart as he looks at his work. Therefore, a rational judgment on a person would require more time and would be based on real facts of this person’s character.
4) It is not wrong to judge people by their physical appearance. If you’re driving through an unfamiliar area late in the evening and notice a group of males with gang symbols, multiple piercings and their underwear sticking up above their waistbands standing around on a street corner, you are going to make an instant judgment based on their appearance – and you are going to keep driving without stopping to ask directions. There are times when judging someone by their physical appearance can literally save your life. It may help protect us from dangerous situations. Would you not judge a menacing looking figure in a dark alley just because it’s “not nice” to look at?
5) We often make unfair conclusions about other people by judging them by their external appearances. In many instances these judgments have proved to be invalid and baseless. For example, my brother is an extremely quiet person and he smiles very rarely. Although it is his nature and not an intentional behaviour, people usually get the impression that he is either very unfriendly or high-minded and tend to keep a distance from him. But those who understand him well appreciate his qualities and value their relationship with him. However, he often becomes a victim of his external appearance and his introvert characteristics, which he cannot help.
6) There is more to someone than his appearance! I feel it is wrong to judge someone based on his physical appearance because it is not an indicator of the type of person he really is. You do not know what the person is capable of, nor do you know what skills he can offer. You also can not tell what type of personality someone has just by looking at them. It’s like that old saying, don’t judge a book by its cover!
