В функции обстоятельства могут употребляться:

Обстоятельство места отвечает на вопрос, начинающийся с вопросительного слова “Where” – Где, Куда.

Hints: - the focus of this activity is on effective communication rather than structural accuracy.

7. Activity 7. Act out these telephone calls sitting back to back with a partner.

  1. Phone the company and ask them to fax an updated price list. Give your name and fax number.

  2. Your company`s price lists are still at the printers. You expect them to arrive today. Write down the details of a customer: name, address, E-mail and fax number.

9. Activity 9. Speak about planned future arrangements.

We often use the Present Continuous Tense [be + arriving] to talk about planned future arrangements.

He is arriving at 12 o`clock.

She is not coming tomorrow.

Is he coming to Kiev on Friday?

What time is the flight arriving?

Activity 9.1. In pairs, students ask and answer questions about Mike`s itinerary.

A: Mike, what date are you arriving in Kharkov?

B: I am arriving on the 10th of February.

A: Are you leaving London on the 10th of February?

B: Yes, I am.

Activity 9.2. Students provide their own examples of planned future actions using the Present Continuous Tense. (8 sentences: 2 positive, 2 negative, 2 general questions and 2 question-word questions)

12. Activity 12. Use the profile “Telephoning” as a draft for your own profile.

I call up Torsten. First of all, I find his telephone number and the code of Sweden. Then, I take the receiver and dial (tap) his home number. I can hear the buzzer. Someone answers the call. I name myself (Oleg calling) and ask one if Torsten is in (Can I speak to Torsten?). When Torsten is on the line I start speaking to him over the phone.

If the line is busy, I dial the number once more. Sometimes, I do it several times until I am a success. Usually, I speak five to ten minutes. When our conversation comes to an end, I say him good-bye (I`m looking forward to hearing from you soon then. Bye-bye.) The conversation is over. I put the receiver on the cradle. Some time later I pay the phone bill.

14. Activity 14. Read the text ‘International call’ and retell it.

All telephone numbers in Ukraine have 10 digits – a 3-digit area code, plus a 7-digit local telephone number. It’s not necessary to dial the area code for local calls. Each region has one area code. You can consult the local telephone directory for specific area codes. When giving phone numbers, Ukrainians usually list numbers in groups of three or four, Americans normally list each digit individually, i.e. 7-1-4-4-5-6-8, for 714-4568.

You can dial directly to any country from Ukraine. If you stay at a hotel, you can dial from a hotel, simply:

  • Dial the hotel’s code for an outside line. Check it with the hotel operator, this number is usually 8 or 9.

  • Dial 10, the international access code.

  • Dial the country code. It’s 380 for Ukraine.

  • Dial the city code. It’s 057 for Kharkov.

  • Dial the local number.

To call in London, the UK, from Ukraine, you would dial 8+10+44+Area Code+Tel#. To call 714-4568 in Kharkov, Ukraine, for example from Russia, you would dial 8+10+380+057+7144568. You can charge a call to your room and pay for it when you check out. However, sometimes hotels will impose a surcharge, so it may be cheaper to use a telephone credit card. Remember the time difference between various countries.

Criteria for evaluation are:

  • to analyze a cause-effect relationship;

  • to ask and answer questions about a cause and effect;

  • to apply verbs “produce, cause, effect, enable, bring about” in a correct way;

  • to use connectives in specifying a cause (due to, as a result of, since, because);

  • to use sentence connectors when introducing a result (thus, with the result that, therefore, hence, so that).
