Exercise 2. Translate the following sentences with Complex Object:

1. They felt the atmosphere in the room grow tense and left. 2. She felt his words sound insincere as he avoided eye contact. 3. I have heard the professor mention about this unexplained phenomenon several times. 4. He has never made his subjects participate in the experimental procedures without their wish. 5. The unexpected circumstances made them refuse from the business trip and send a message with apologies. 6. They saw her prepare for the experiment under new conditions. 7. The scholar noticed his co-workers look exhausted and fatigued after this complicated experiment. 8. The sociologists made the polled respond to the questions spontaneously. 9. Exercise 3. Translate the following compound sentences into English transforming them into simple sentences with Complex Object. Choose the appropriate form of the Infinitive (Indefinite or Perfect, Active or Passive):

Model: Мы ожидаем, что он примет участие в этой конференции. – We expect him to attend the conference. Мы знаем, что он принимал участие в этой конференции. – We know him to have attended the conference. Мы считаем, что программа была проверена должным образом. – We believe the program to have been checked properly.

Exercise 4. Translate into English.

Exercise 5. Translate into English, underlining Complex Object.

Exercise 6. Translate the following sentences:

Model: Это дает нам возможность исправить ошибку. – It enables us to correct the mistake. Это позволило исправить ошибку. – It allowed the mistake to be corrected.

Exercise 7. Restate the following sentences to show that you want somebody else to do the action. Translate the resulting sentences into English.

Model: I want to go there. – I want you to go there.

Exercise 8. Explain the cause of somebody’s action. (Make use of the following verbs: get, allow, force, press, tell, bring oneself, cause, induce, order.)

Model: I don't see Grace here. (mother, come) – Her mother didn 't allow her to come.

1. I wonder how he managed to sell this picture. It was horrible. (someone, buy)

2. I say, did he really get the job? (they, take)

3. Well, I never! Look who is here. How did you manage to cover two hundred miles so quickly? There is no morning train. (Carl, give someone a lift)

Exercise 9. Express your opinion about somebody. (Make use of the following verbs: believe, know, think, suppose.)

Model: He is very intelligent. – I believe him (to be) very intelligent.

4. He is of a somewhat romantic nature.

5. He is a cunning man.

6. He is a careless fellow.

Exercise 10. Ask what is expected of you. (Make use of the following words: do, turn down (отвергать), help, answer, keep aside (оставаться в стороне))

Model: I know he’s been rather rude, but, please, don’t ruin the party. – Do you expect me to stay after that?

1. There is this report we have to submit before the end of the month, and you know Gregory is on leave.

2. Summer is coming, Mum. And you know we were planning to go to the mountains. And baby-sitters are so difficult to find.

3. I know it was not a nice letter to get but after all he is so much older than you are.
