5) Explain the usage of the verb-forms in the passages below. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. She wanted to buy a new coat. 2. Were you wanting a room in our hotel? 2. From his seat Soames was watching. 4. He watched this careless face with an unpleasant feeling. 5. But then she realized he was standing to one side for her and passed him hurriedly. 6. The great pine trees stood like sen­tinels along the river.

6) Reword the sentences according to the models. Make all the necessary changes.

Model A. They had been away from town since Friday, (for 2 days). - They had been away from town for two days.

1. Тhey had known each other since childhood, (for many years).

2. She had been there since 2 o'clock, (for 2 hours). 3. She had not felt so well for weeks (since Monday). 4. The two had not met for fourteen years, (since childhood). 5. I had been on the job since morning, (for 3 hours).

Model B. They had been there since 1982, (to live). - They had been living there since 1982.

  1. The woman had been silent all the time, (to sit silent). 2. They had been in search since morning. (to search) 3. I had been there for 5 hours, (to read). 4. He had known about it all the time, (to think). 5. He had had his eyes on the house for the last two years, (to keep his eyes).

7) Explain the usage of the verb-forms in the passages below, translate the sentences into Russian.

1. He had felt for some days that something was wrong. 2. I had not been feeling well for some days. 3. He did not know how long she had been there. 4. The subjects on which we had been reading had interested me. 3. It had long been impos­sible to start. 6. He wondered what she had been thinking about all the time.

8) Reword the sentences according to the models. Make all the necessary changes.

Model A. We often talked with our teacher after classes.

We would talk with our teacher after classes.

We used to talk with our teacher after classes.

Model B. We always talked English at English lessons.

They were always talking at lessons.

9) Explain the usage of the forms of the verbs in the passages below. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. He had bought pictures from time to time. 2. All during the three days of her visit she had been doing that. 3. June had twice been to tea there. 4. After that she had been always running after him; and when she took a thing into her head there was no stopping her. 5. The arm-chairs were in sad shape, because everybody was sitting on them. 6. I have always enjoyed her coming here. 7. I have always been fond of you, Gerald. 8. Robin, you've always been selfish.
