4.1. Luckily Tom has managed to quit drinking quite easily, many people can’t do that. What helped him to get rid of this harmful habit? Is drinking a habit or a real disease?

4.2. What measures should be taken at school to prevent children from drinking alcohol? What alcohol facts would you mention if you talked with your pupils / students and tried to convince them how destructive this habit can be?

Section 1. Warming-up

1.1. A drug is any natural or artificially made chemical which is used as a medicine or taken for pleasure to improve someone's performance of an activity, or because a person cannot stop using it. There are various kinds of drugs, but all of them can be classified into three groups. Match the names of the drug groups and their descriptions.

2.1. Study the words which may cause difficulties in understanding.

2.2. Listen to the first part of the recording and clarify the difference between “substance abuse” and “addiction”. Be ready to answer the questions.

2.3. Now listen to the second part of the recording and fill in the gaps with the words or expressions you hear in the text.

Signs of Addiction

The most obvious sign of an addiction is the need (…1…). However, many other signs can suggest a possible addiction, such as (…2…) or weight loss or gain. (These also are signs of other conditions, too, though, such as (…3…) or eating disorders.) Signs that you or someone you know may have a drug or alcohol addiction include:

Psychological signals:
