Vocabulary work

1. Translate the following words and word-combinations into Russian.

To inject drugs, prevention, Aids charity, to be widely acknowledged, epidemic, HIV positive, childbearing age, to confirm, the struggle against HIV infection, complacent, to raise awareness.

2. Paraphrase the italicized part in the sentences.

  1. "There was zero information. Aids was just an abbreviation, it didn't mean anything," he said.

  2. Authorities were in virtual denial that Aids could exist in Russia.

  3. The rate of infection is spiralling upwards.

  4. And it is women who are being hardest hit.

  5. The government will massively increase its Aids budget next year.

Section 3. Listening

3.1. Listen to the text and resrore the missing information.

Washington's HIV / Aids problem is getting worse, not better. There's been ( …1…) in the past two years. The city's department of health says that 3% of its residents over the age of twelve are (…2…). That's a rate that officials say is on a par with Uganda and parts of Kenya. The United Nations’ definition of an epidemic is when it affects (…3…).

The city is discussing ways of (…6…) with an emphasis on more testing. But Washington's Mayor Adrian Fenty says that so far the message appears to be going in one ear and out the other.

4.1. Read the quote given below and respond to it in your essay. The words belong to Kofi Annan, who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. In 2001 he got Nobel Peace Prize for his founding the Global AIDS and Health Fund to support developing countries.

"What was first reported as a few cases of a mystery illness is now a pandemic that poses among the greatest threats to global progress in the 21st century. The only acceptable goal for the world is to stop and, ultimately, put an end to AIDS. Only then will we …succeed in our efforts to build a humane, healthy and equitable world."

4.2. Divide into teams of 3-5 students. Each team should develop a 'game plan' for how they are going to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and prevent discrimination against those infected.

You should come up with the following.

  • Develop a group name and logo.

  • The group's mission statement.

  • Long and short term goals for the group.

  • Find other organizations to collaborate with.
