Module 2 making a political speech

I. Input materials.

    1. Rhetoric strategy.

This sort of delivery has its specific rhetorical strategy for it is a speech to persuade that attempts to influence the listeners’ beliefs or actions; hence it supplies arguments and motives for thinking or doing as the speaker recommends. Although the purpose of a persuasive speech is to win belief or produce action, an unwilling decision is of little value. To persuade successfully, therefore, you not only must make your listeners believe or do something, but you also must make them want to believe or do it. It is evident that intonation has always been of primary importance here. As it was stated above, the purpose of this kind of public performance is to stimulate, inspire the listeners, to arouse interest in them. Thus, facial expression, bodily movement, gestures are extremely important and assist to achieve the task, putting heart into the message. The proper response of audience inspires the speaker and stimulates him for an ever more successful public performance.

    1. Style forming factors:

  • the purpose of communication – to impose the speakers’ ideas on the listeners, to call for some action;

  • the speaker’s attitude – volitional and desiderative;

  • the form of communication – a monologue

  • the degree of formality – tend to be formal, “high-flown” phrases are commonly used;

  • the degree of spontaneity – prepared in advance
