METALS AND THEIR SELECTION

Metals and their alloys have a characteristic lustre and appearance, they are cold to touch because of their high thermal conductivity, and many of them are ductile and malleable; that is, they will stand a good deal of twisting, stretching, or hammering without failure. These and other properties we recognize as metallic, and we realize that metals and alloys are quite different from other common substances – stone, brick, wood, concrete, leather, and even the compounds of the metals themselves. These metallic properties are due to the atomic make-up of the solid me­tals and alloys, and there is a sharp differentiation between the metals and other solid materials.

Two outstanding properties of metals and alloys are the direct result of their atomic structures:

1. Mechanical properties. — Many metals and alloys are ductile and malleable, and these properties combined with their strength make them invaluable for many purposes of construction. Not all metal are ductile and malleable, nor are they all especially strong, but in almost all cases where metals and alloys are used for purposes of construc­tion the basic reason for their use will be one of the follow­ing: a) their mechanical strength or hardness; b) their formability (ductility and malleability), which permits the mechanical shaping of an object (rolling, forging, stamp­ing, extruding, etc.) and insures against the failure in serv­ice that would result if a brittle material were used; c) some combination of a) and b).

Of course, the choice of a given metal or alloy for a cer­tain use may be modified by other considerations – cost, density, resistance to corrosion, etc. – but the basic reas­ons are those given here. Malleability and ductility are strictly metallic properties and are not possessed by any nonmetallic substances.

2. Electrical properties. — Solid metals and alloys con­tain free electrons, and the motion of these free electrons through a metallic body constitutes an electric current. Metals and alloys are the only solid materials that contain these free electrons; hence they are the only substances (except electrolytes) that can conduct an electric current, and they are the reservoir of free electrons. We could con­ceivably use wood, concrete, stone, plastics, and other ma­terials to replace metals for certain constructional and decorative purposes, but for electrical uses there is no substitute.
